“Is he in any condition to talk?” I asked the nurse who looked back at him and thought for a moment.

“Well, he's still recovering …” she said, returning her gaze to me.

I looked her in the eye so that she could recognize the seriousness and urgency of my subtle request, which she glared at vehemently.

“...but by all means. He may or may not respond,” she replied with a lazy drawl.

“Thank you,” I managed to squeeze out a smile, however faint.

She hesitated for a while, maybe she forgot herself or maybe she just wanted to get on my nerves. However, the way I glowered at her must have straightened her up again.

“Okay …I'll um …I'll leave you two alone now,” she said, hugging the notepad in readiness to walk away.

“Yeah. Yeah, you should,” came my stern response.

“Okay …” she muttered under her breath and walked past me.

I watched her cautiously until she left the ward and shut the door behind her. It was then I heard his faint voice calling out my name.

“Ashley …”

“Hey, dad …” I sat at the edge of the bed, smiling at him. He looked weak, lying there with those pale eyes.

“Who did this to you, Dad?” I inquired, feeling a rush of anger surging through my blood. All I wanted to do was find them and so-help-me-God …

He coughed a couple of times and I rushed to the water dispenser at the other side of the room and fetched him a glass.

“Here,” I said, helping him sit upright. I tucked a pillow behind his shoulders and head and gently nudged him to lean back. He rested his head on it while I handed him the glass of water.

With worry in my eyes, I watched as he took his time to gulp down the glass of water. I figured he was in more pain than he wanted to admit. He was hiding his pain … as he always did.

“Who did this to you, Dad?” I asked again, clenching a fist.

“I wish I knew the answer to that too, sweetheart,” he replied, the weakness in his speech obvious. His voice was low, and to be honest, that alone scared the shit out of me.

I can't lose him. He must get better.

“Did you see anything–a face, a tattoo–anything to help us identify the attacker–anything at all?” The words burst out of me in a rush. “A familiar voice perhaps …”

He just looked at me and smiled, my heart melted instantly. He took my hand and said calmly, “I didn't see or hear anything.”

I bowed my head and exhaled sharply, a little disappointed. If only he had something and could point me in the right direction. Nikolai and I would find the asshole and oh how I would enjoy watching Nik rip him to shreds.

Nik, oh fuck!

There was a warm sensation in my panties, just at the mere thought of that man … I could've sworn my pussy screamed at the sound of his name in my head.

No. Please. Not now. I can't be having such thoughts right now. This is beyond inappropriate!

I closed my eyes for a few seconds and breathed in slowly through my nose and out through my mouth. This technique always helped me to keep myself under control. It always worked when I was flustered at inappropriate moments like this.

“Everything alright, sweetheart?” he asked, and I smiled at him.

“Everything's fine, Dad.” I took his hand in mine. “Now, don't you worry. The police are working on your case. And they’ll find whoever did this and bring them to justice.” I didn’t even believe that myself but for some reason, I still said it.

“The police?” He scoffed at the ridiculousness of what he just heard. “They won't be able to do a damn thing. That, I can assure you,” he continued, “This is a lot bigger than the local police. This is the doing of someone powerful. And you and I both know that powerful people never get caught. They always get away.”

“I fear for your safety, Dad.”
