“Yes. We’d each have our own room.”

“And you had fun last night, right?”

“We had a blast.” She summarized everything from dinner to the movie to the kiss on her cheek at the end of the night. She gnawed her lower lip. “I just don’t know if it’s too soon to invite him to the beach since we’re not officially dating.”

“Darcy, I know you wanna take things slow, but he might feel your hesitation. Maybe if you invite him, he’ll see you’re ready to date and ask if you want to make it official.”

An image of kissing Carter on the beach filled her mind, and a sudden rush of desire pulsed through her body. “Okay. I’ll invite him, but I told my mom not to talk about the kidney transplant. I’m not ready to tell him yet.”

“Why not?”

Darcy cupped her hand to her forehead. “I’m just not. I already told him about Jace and don’t want to overwhelm him. I’ll explain everything else to him eventually. Would you please tell Derek not to talk about the kidney transplant?”

“I will. Now call Carter and then text me. In the meantime, I’ll call Derek and tell him to get up and start packing for the beach. Bye.” Haven disconnected the call.

Darcy’s hands trembled as she hit the button to dial Carter’s number. Why was she so nervous? Turning toward her nightstand, she cringed when she realized it was only eight thirty. She hoped he was awake.

“Darcy,” Carter said through a yawn. “Hi.”

She covered her face with her free hand. “Oh no. I woke you.”

His chuckle rumbled through the phone. “It’s okay. What’s up?”

“Wanna go to the beach?”

Silence filled the phone line.

“Right now?”

“Yeah. My parents are at their beach house for the weekend, and they told me to invite friends down. I know it’s last-minute, but Haven and Derek are coming too, and you can have your own room. We can come back on Monday. If you’re not busy...” Her voice trailed off.

More silence filled the line, and she bit her lower lip as worry coursed through her. Was it too soon for them to do something like this? After all, they’d only known each other a few weeks.

Oh no...

“I’d love to,” he finally said, sounding fully awake. “What do I need to bring?”

“Your swimsuit.” She felt her cheeks heat thinking of him in his suit. “Oh, and other clothes, of course. Whatever you want to wear.”

“What time should I pick you up?”

“Whenever you’re ready to leave.”

“Great,” he said. “I’ll pack and head your way. See you soon.”

Darcy hung up and gave a little screech of happiness before texting Haven: Carter said yes! He’s going to pack and head my way ??

Haven: I talked to Derek and he said yes too. We’ll meet you at your place soon.

Darcy danced out of bed and started packing.

Chapter15

An hour later Darcy dashed out the front door and down the steps to where Carter stood in the driveway. He was already talking with Derek and Haven next to Haven’s Honda CR-V.

Carter turned and grinned as she joined them. “There’s the woman who woke me up this morning.”

“She woke me up too.” Haven laughed.
