“And we’re lucky for that.” I fall back on the bed next to him.

“You know that EJ has been just as uncommunicative with me as he has been with you. You don’t need to worry. He’s just busy with hockey.”

“How’d you know I was worrying?”

“I can see your wheels turning from here,” Marc laughs.

“I’m excited to see him. I miss him so much. When do you think he’ll be back? Next week?”

“Sounds about right. Even though their season ended last night, I’m sure he has to stick around Dallas for a little bit.”

“You think they offered him a contract?”

“Oh, there’s no question in my mind about that. With how he played? He’ll have gotten a good one too.”

“He deserves it.”

“Are we going to graduation tomorrow?” Ali asks, walking into my room.

I look over to Marc, waiting for his opinion. We don’t have any friends graduating this year, so there’s really no point in attending.

“So, I can tell Patrick to fuck off one last time?” Marc asks with sarcasm. “No, thanks. I’m good.”

“Are you two going to miss me this summer or what?” Ali finds her way to my bed, the three of us squishing together.

I furrow my brows. “Obviously. It’s going to be weird not seeing you for three months.”

“Have you and Maddison talked about your summer plans?”

“Not yet. We’ve got to figure if Dallas offers him a contract first and, if so, when he needs to be back in Texas. And I need to make sure we’re okay.”

“Stop.” Ali rolls onto her side, facing me. “You guys could go an entire year without seeing each other, and you’d still be great. He’s obsessed with you, Logan.”

“Obsessed,” Marc echoes.

“Knowing him, he’s having a hard time being away from you, and the more he talks to you, the harder it gets for him.”

I hope she’s right. I need her to be right. If that’s the reason for Eli’s lack of communication with me, I can completely understand. I just need him to tell me that.

“And you’re in a funk because you haven’t been to the gym,” Ali reminds me. “So tomorrow, I’m kicking your ass in the weight room before my flight out on Sunday. Well, as much of an ass-kicking as I can give you with that weak little leg of yours.”

“Jerk.”

“I’ve never been stronger than you, so I’m soaking it in while I can.”

My phone dings on the nightstand, and Ali passes it over to me as I stay sandwiched between my two closest friends.

“What the hell?” I ask in shock, staring at my phone screen.

“What is it?” Marc leans over to read my latest text from Eli. “You’re shitting me,” he laughs.

“How the hell did I not know about this?”

“I didn’t either,” Marc adds, unable to contain his amused laughter. “That sneaky little shit.”

Over the last six weeks, not once has Eli mentioned that he was still in school or that his professors allowed him to finish remotely. I had no idea.

I reread Eli’s text.
