“What about the note?” he reminds me. “Did you read the note?”

“I did. You want to see me in that saree. I read it.”

“The second note, Maahi?”

“Umm. It had a second note too? Where? I didn't get it.” I tease.

For a second, he wonders if I’m telling the truth but the next instant he sees me grinning and knows I am teasing him. Vikram pulls me closer by my nape.

“Vikram? Stop. Daadi can see us.”

“She won’t come back so soon.”

I lick my lips as they go dry suddenly as I stare intensely in my husband’s eyes. There is something about him these days which draws me to him with such intensity that I can never comprehend.

“Is that day coming soon?” Vikram asks. “When I get to see you in that saree, ready to give me every right on you?”

I'm speechless.

“Actually, know what, Maahi?” he continues. “Surprise me. There is nothing more romantic than that.”

Surprise him? Well! That’s my plan too.

Daadi returns and he leaves me to focus back on the gulab jamuns.

VIKRAM

It's almost midnight, and I'm still on an audio conference with my US team, including my father. We're discussing a crucial project for this quarter.

“I'm aware of the finances, Alex. We might have to minimize the cost of raw materials as much as possible,” I say, just as the door slides open.

Maahi peeks in, wearing a black satin robe that immediately catches my attention. I wonder what she's wearing underneath as I wave her inside, clearing my throat to refocus on the call.

“Right. And get in touch with the Sicon group head. They've worked with this client before, so they can provide insights,” I continue, my eyes fixed on Maahi as she saunters towards my desk.

As my father takes over, I put the call on speaker and mute. “You're still awake?” I ask Maahi, who perches innocently on the edge of my desk, though her eyes tell a different story.

“I couldn't sleep. I miss you,” she says, licking her lips temptingly.

I gesture for her to be quiet as I unmute briefly to agree with Dad, then mute again.

“Right Dad. I agree” I say before muting the call again.

“Can you take a short break?” Maahi suggests, and I'm sorely tempted.

“No,” I almost bark, knowing that anything involving Maahi would require far more time than I can spare right now.

She sighs and prepares to leave, but I grab her wrist. “I've got ten minutes,” I say, my voice needy and hoarse.

“That's too little, don't you think?” she teases.

“Fifteen minutes max,” I offer, frustrated and desperate.

Maahi laughs, understanding my predicament. “It's fine. I was just teasing. Finish your call and let me know if you need anything. Should I get you some coffee?”

I swallow, touched by her understanding. “A black coffee would be great. And go to sleep. I'll join you soon.”

Before she leaves, I pull her in for an urgent kiss, which she returns with equal fervor. My father's voice on the call forces us apart. I compose myself and unmute, adding my input while watching Maahi leave.
