“I choose you,” she mumbled. “Always… and always… I am done with that part of my life. I enjoy working behind the stage now and leading the show. I like training models, pitching clients and sponsors’ attention for new projects. I am working on a very huge scope, and it gives me the confidence of leading something which never happened before. I think I will keep continuing this.”

Ranveer had no qualms with whatever she decided for herself.

“And coming to the ramp walk,” she slid her arms around his neck, snuggling closer. “I can put on a private show for you,” Maya winked.

A smile teased the corner of his lips.

“That’s quite a turn on,” he answered, pecking her lips and shifting her onto his lap. She kissed him back. Time was never short when it came to loving him.

Chapter 65

Café Shop

Maya entered the cafe, her two bodyguards discreetly taking positions nearby. Adira was already seated at a corner table. Given Adira's quick agreement to her father's marriage to Maya’s mother, Maya felt compelled to meet her, if only to ascertain whether there were any ulterior motives behind her acquiescence.

Seeing Maya, Adira masked her simmering resentment behind a fake smile. Maya wasn't fooled; she knew Adira still harbored bitterness.

“I thought it would be just us,” Adira remarked as Maya sat down.

“You know Ranveer is. He insists on my full-time security,” Maya sighed.

“He still thinks I will harm you?”

“He trusts no one, Adira”

“Yeah.” Adira frowned.

Maya ordered coffee while Adira sipped her juice.

“Are you truly accepting your dad's marriage decision or is he pressuring you?” Maya asked directly.

“No one's pressuring me,” Adira claimed. “I'm done with his moping over loneliness and lying to me to meet your mom.”

Maya nodded, unconvinced. “But that doesn’t justify it, Adira. Are you ready to give your mother’s place to someone else?”

“Can you?” Adira asked. “Vivek Bajaj is your real father. His blood runs in you, Maya. When you still cannot accept him in your father’s role how can I accept the woman who was the reason for my mother’s loveless life in her place?”

Maya flinched inwardly at the barb.

“My mother came in his life first, Adira. It was his decision to sideline her and marry your mother instead for his family sake.”

“Yet your mom clung to him, gave you his name illegally.”

She had a point.

“They both made mistakes,” Maya snapped. “Both caused us pain.”

“Right, both were wrong,” Adira conceded after a pause.

“You think their marriage will make it right?” Maya challenged.

“At least they'll be happy if we're not,” Adira justified weakly.

Maya leaned back, disappointed. “Adira Bajaj is accepting defeat?”

It provoked Adira and that’s exactly what Maya wanted to do. Her true colors would be revealed only when Adira got frustrated. Adira bristled at the taunt.

“No one defeats me, not even my loved ones,” she replied.
