“Yeah, just a little… busy,” she lied.

“And upset,” he added.

He was too good at reading her emotions.

“What’s bothering you, sweetheart?” he inquired.

“Nothing,” she deflected.

“You know what it does to me when you lie,” he chided. “Don’t make me come there and get the truth.”

Maya exhaled. He could do that, and she didn’t want it to happen. It was her first day at work after marriage, and she didn’t want her colleagues and boss to find her husband intruding on her work. She decided to confide in him.

“Vivek Bajaj sent me a marriage gift.”

“Ignore it,” Ranveer suggested.

“How? It’s too expensive. I can’t let him think I’m using it when all I want to do is throw it away,” she snarled.

Ranveer understood. “Wife,” his tone was authoritative, “calm down. Don’t stress over petty things.”

“Correction, husband,” she argued. “I am stressing over expensive things that I don’t want to accept.”

“Then return it,” he advised.

Yes, she could do that. Why keep it when it hurt her so much?

“I will. Thank you for the idea. I will visit Bajaj Mansion and return it to him.”

“I can join you,” Ranveer offered.

She knew he would join her anywhere.

“I can go alone. He shouldn’t think I’m there to bully him if I go with you,” she reasoned.

Ranveer sneered at her reply. “I wish to be with you everywhere… all day… all night…”

Maya's mood improved, and the romance resurfaced.

“My personal bodyguard position is vacant. Why don’t you apply? I’ll consider it after checking your skills,” she teased.

Ranveer cleared his throat, his body responding to her teasing.

“I can show you my skills tonight, if you’re not tired after work,” he countered.

Maya clasped her fingers over the edge of her desk, recalling every moment he had demonstrated his affection.

“We’ll see,” she murmured.

“I need a guarantee,” he insisted.

Maya chuckled. “This phone romance is wasting my time. I should get back to work, or I’ll have to stay extra hours.”

Ranveer let out a frustrated breath. He had just started enjoying their conversation amidst his dull work.

“I’ll pick you up at 6:00 p.m. We’ll go see him together. No arguments,” he commanded.

Maya pressed her lips together. She didn’t want to argue. Having him by her side was all she wanted.
