Maya's heart dropped.

“I have to check on her, ensure this doesn't blow back on us,” Ranveer sighed in frustration.

As he moved to leave, Maya grasped his arm. “I'm coming along with you.”

“No.”

“Ranveer, please. We should handle this together. She did this because of us. I’m coming with you.”

Ranveer hesitated but gave in to her pleading look. “Fine, let's go.”

They discreetly exited the building to deal with the disturbing new development.

Bajaj House

This was the first time Maya had stepped into this Bungalow. She had never expected to even glimpse at it before, considering how much she hated her father for never accepting her mother and her, but today’s case was different. Adira’s rash attempt to end her life had brought her here.

As they both entered the house, one of the servants stopped them.

“Sir is very busy today; he cannot meet anyone,” he informed them.

Ranveer threw an irritated glance at the servant who was probably warned not to let any guests in the home, considering the news of Adira's suicide attempt was meant to be contained within these walls.

“We know what's keeping him busy. Tell him that Ranveer and his wife are here,” Ranveer said firmly.

The servant was skeptical but Ranveer's stern gaze made him check with his boss once. Maya felt her body trembling as she saw the big picture of Vivek Bajaj with his wife and daughter hanging on the wall. It was a very old frame - Adira was hardly 5 or 6 years old. They looked like a happy family.

“You can go inside,” the servant returned. “Sir is in Miss Adira's room on the first floor.”

Ranveer nodded and walked ahead with Maya slowly following. She was scared to step into the room and face Adira and Vivek Bajaj. She had never felt so nervous before. Ranveer noticed her reluctance.

“You can stay down until I see them,” he suggested.

“No,” she gulped. “I am ready.”

She had made up her mind and Ranveer didn’t want to push her away. He opened the door to Adira's room. It was a girly room with posters of top musicians, Bollywood and Hollywood stars hanging on the walls. Adira lay pale and unconscious on the bed while a team of doctors treated her. Her wrist was bandaged and her other arm connected to a Blood IV. Vivek Bajaj sat there helpless, looking sick seeing his daughter’s condition.

“Mr. Bajaj,” Ranveer spoke to get his attention.

Vivek raised his head and glanced at them. The pain of seeing the same two people responsible for Adira's suicide attempt was evident on his face briefly, but then he calmed himself.

“Look what she did,” he gestured towards the bed. “She tried to end her life for you.”

The doctors paid them no heed, just kept treating Adira, checking her vitals and trying to stabilize her. Maya's eyes filled with tears, though she was unsure if it was for Adira's state or her father's. Ranveer wanted to argue that he had nothing to do with Adira's foolish act but decided not to add to Vivek's grief, not in this moment with his daughter facing possible death.

Maya could no longer hold back her tears, nor did she wish to attract her father's attention. She turned around and walked out of the room, unable to bear the scene. Ranveer followed her.

He found her standing by a pillar, breathing hard. She was clearly remorseful for something she was not responsible for. He turned her around to face him and saw the guilt in her eyes.

“That's why I told you not to come with me,” he murmured.

“I'm fine,” she lied, wiping her moist eyes. “I just can't see anyone in the state Adira is in right now.”

Ranveer didn't interrupt but let her speak.

“My mom. She tried these attempts before. I've seen her in pain, crying for the man she loves. And I can imagine what Adira must have gone through.”

“You're not justifying Adira's actions, are you?” he scowled.
