“Regarding?” She gripped the coffee mug in her hand, which Laura had offered her the moment she stepped into the house.

“Adira Bajaj,” he mentioned cautiously.

Maya's heart skipped a beat. What about Adira? Was this because of last evening? Did Adira complain? Ranveer didn’t even know about it. She tried not to show any signs of worry on her face but failed to hide it for long.

“So, you live in here with Ranveer Malhotra. May I ask you why?” Atul seemed to be drawing a scenario connecting Maya – Adira – Ranveer.

“Because she is marrying me soon,” a voice came from behind them. Ranveer strode inside, loosening his tie. Maya felt a little relieved now that he was here, but did he just say that to the policemen? He took the mug from Maya and sipped some of her coffee, just like any other couple would share, leaving her clueless. She should have told Ranveer about her meeting with Adira last evening. He could have handled it better.

Atul Mishra observed them keenly, especially Ranveer’s interference in this matter. His sharp eyes noticed the shared glances between Ranveer and Maya. It was an awkward situation for Maya to involve Ranveer in matters she hadn’t even told him about.

“Oh, wow, we didn’t know the decision had been made,” the cop replied.

“That’s because we didn’t make it official yet,” Ranveer continued to respond. “What about Adira do you wish to speak to my fiancée, officer?”

“Well,” Atul cleared his throat. “Miss Adira Bajaj has filed a complaint against Maya Bajaj, saying she assaulted her.”

Ranveer scowled at Maya for being so reckless in handling a situation like that. She didn’t stay calm either.

“She is lying; I just—”

Ranveer gripped her arm, pressing it hard to stop Maya from revealing anything further.

“It’s okay, sweetheart. We know it's false. Adira has never been happy about us. So, that’s okay. She will raise false accusations like these,” his challenging eyes threw daggers at her.

“It is our duty to find what the truth is, Mr. Malhotra,” Atul intervened. “Miss Bajaj, you were saying something,” he urged Maya to speak.

“My lawyer will talk to you on her behalf, Inspector.” Ranveer once again didn’t let her get into this conversation.

Atul smirked.

“Smart move,” he muttered, looking at the two. “Well then, we will be glad to take this forward with your lawyer. But we need you both to cooperate in case we have more questions.”

“Sure,” Ranveer extended his arm to both the officers. “Good night.”

The officers left, and Laura escorted them to the elevator. Once they were gone, Ranveer held her gaze.

“You didn’t care to tell me about this?” he sounded pissed, and he had every right to be so.

“I didn’t want to overburden you… to disturb you.”

“What happened now disturbed me, Maya. Because I wasn’t prepared to protect you. I have taken every known measure to ensure you are safe, and this is what you do? Hide such crucial things from me?” he snapped.

Maya sighed in disappointment.

“I had no clue Adira would go to this extent,” she replied.

Ranveer rolled his eyes and then, calming his anger down, he gripped her forearms, pulling her closer.

“Adira or anyone, in that matter, who wants to separate you from me can go to any extent. Next time, please don’t hide things from me,” he said, rubbing his palms on her upper arms, easing off the goosebumps formed on her skin. She was hell scared for the last few minutes. Being accused of something she never did intentionally could get that fear in you.

“Now, care to tell me what happened between you and Adira?”

Maya told him about last evening’s incident at the clinic. Ranveer patiently listened to her and then handed her a glass of water to drink.

“She spoke ill about my mother; how do you think I would react? I slapped her, and I don’t regret it,” Maya burst out in anger. “But that’s all what happened. She is accusing me for more which I didn’t do.”

Ranveer dialed Roy, his lawyer, and kept the phone on speaker. He discussed this matter with the attorney and then asked him to find a solution to it. Something which could favor them. It took an hour for them to finish the call with Roy and then focus back on each other.
