“Mom,” Maya shouted, striding hastily out of the private elevator. She was in the middle of a meeting at Blitz when Laura called her up informing about her mother’s health. She panicked, and without even realizing to inform her boss Vikram that she was leaving, she drove all the way home.

Ranveer met her in the hallway.

“Ranveer, what happened? Is Mom, okay?” She gripped his arms.

“Relax. Your mother is fine. You just calm down. The doctors have been called, and they are treating her inside.”

“Treating her? What happened to her? How did she fall unconscious? She is taking her medicines regularly. I myself give her that then… how?”

Her tearful eyes and panicked face were unbearable for Ranveer to watch. He could well imagine how she must have handled all those times alone, during such similar situations. He pulled her along and made her sit on the couch.

“Sit here,” he commanded.

“No, I want to see Mumma,” she resisted.

“Maya,” his stern voice scared her even more. “You should know what happened first,” he added.

He sat beside her, gripping Maya’s hand in his.

“Detective Patel had come home. Seems they have tracked the owner of that maroon car.”

“My mother is ill, Ranveer. I don’t care to know about anything else but the reason why she suddenly became sick. We can talk about this later.”

“No,” he shouted. “Whatever I am telling you now, your mother heard me talking to Patel, and that’s why she fainted.”

Maya was speechless again.

“That car belongs to Vivek Bajaj,” he finally revealed.

Maya trembled. Vivek Bajaj? Her father? He was following her all this time? He would he harm her? Why? There couldn’t be any real motive behind this.

“I'm not saying he was behind your accident,” Ranveer explained. “However, he is somehow connected, either directly or indirectly. We'll uncover that soon. Your mother heard Patel and me discussing this and she came to know that it wasn't an accident but a deliberate attempt to harm you, orchestrated by your father's vehicle. Unfortunately, she couldn't bear the revelation. We had no clue that she would be around at the exact moment we were discussing this matter. Otherwise, I would have taken precautions, you know.”

Yes, she knew Ranveer shouldn’t be held responsible for this. But the harm was done, and they had to tackle it. She thought hard. What would she tell her mother? How would she react to know that the man she loved so much even now could hurt their daughter?

The doctors came out of Garima’s bedroom. Maya and Ranveer both headed back to them.

“How is Mrs. Bajaj, Doctor?”

“She is resting. She had fallen unconscious because of stress. She will be fine by tomorrow morning. Just ensure that you don’t let her take more stress after she wakes up.”

Maya took a sigh of relief and ran inside to see her mother. Ranveer waited with the doctors outside.

“We will need a full-time nurse to look after her until she recovers completely,” he demanded.

“No problem, Ranveer. We will send one.”

“Thank you,” he shook hands with them and asked Laura to show them the way out.

When he had entered Garima's room, he found Maya sitting next to her sleeping mother, holding her hand. She might have been worried and teary but she was trying to be strong. It was hard for any child to see their parents suffering. He had once been in a similar situation. His mother was at the hospital taking her last breath and he couldn’t do anything but watch her die. All this money and power couldn’t save his mother. He had failed. But he wouldn't let Maya face the same fate. He was alone that time, having no one to share his pain, his tears but he wouldn’t let her be alone. She had him. He wanted her to know that. He came inside and stood next to Maya, placing his palm gently over her shoulder blade.

“She will be fine,” he murmured softly.

He didn’t know how these words came onto his lips. He had never shown any sympathy, mercy or shared others' pain before. He thought that part of him had died after his mother passed away. But today, suddenly when he was giving strength to Maya, he realized it had never died. It was just waiting to console the right person in his life.

She pressed his wrist and leaned her head on it. A gentle sob was enough to weaken him again. She gripped his arm tight and in a flash of a second, her arms wrapped around his waist and she hugged him, her cheek pressed against his stomach, her tears soaking an inch of his shirt. Maya sobbed hard. He fisted his fingers for seeing her so fragile and then slowly caressed her hair in a soothing motion. She continued to draw strength from him for some more time and then pulled herself away, wiping her tears.
