Or was there more to this quest than the Sky Watchers told me?

After what felt like hours, the invisible tugs pulled my hem to a floor with an open concept and one glass door. I cocked a prominent brow, holding my slippers close, looking around.

“I don’t get it.” I turned in a circle, taking it all in. “Is this some kind of suite? Where are the other rooms?”

The tug pulled me towards the door. When I reached for the handle, it opened on its own. I poked my head inside, looking around. Then my knees buckled.

“Holy gods.”

A sharp poke at my thigh made me hiss. Eyes still looking around the suite, I reached beneath my skirts and shifted the dagger strapped to my leg. Certain it wouldn’t poke me again, I crossed into the suite and took it all in.

Multiple doors led to chambers I knew I’d spend hours exploring. A beautiful case of scrolls lined a wall, while gloriously colorful tapestries hung on another, etched in stories of angels. A long table—carved of glass and covered in golden platters—added to the grandeur of the space.

It struck me how rapidly I felt at home.

There was a peace that filled my heart. One I realize I hadn’t felt since Mother and I fled Elèor. A lump formed in my throat as I looked around. The charm in every detail left me speechless. Though I was surrounded by glass, precious art, and carved marble, I felt warm and safe.

The tug gently guided me to the door in the corner. It looked made of crystal chunks, which had been refined by fire. In stunned silence, I shuffled through the massive suite and tip-toed across an elongated corridor that bled out into a bedchamber.

“Oh my skies,” I breathed.

From the large, four-poster bed encircled by drapes of lace, to the silver armoire with lavender touches. A reading nook with a plush, velvet couch and adjacent table perched on one end, while a yawning opening revealed a closet made for a High Queen, on the other. The sight took my breath away.

“There’s no way this is my room.” I looked around, half expecting to see someone there. Met by nothing but fresh air, I twirled around myself slowly, drinking in my new home. “Truly, there’s no way… right?”

I almost lost myself in all the perfection when I remembered. I wasn’t here to make a new home in this hidden paradise of clouds.

I was here to win my restitution.

Shaking my head, I shoved down my awe, and flung my slippers down. I spotted an equally grand washroom and gave myself the luxury of a nice, hot bath. By the time I resurfaced, clothed in nothing but a cozy towel, I felt revived.

And hungry.

My stomach rumbled. A light pain tapped my temples. I hadn’t eaten since before I started work yesterday. With all the commotion of these angels, I hadn’t thought of food until now.

I threw open the garderobe perched by the large mirror. Gowns, dresses, chemises, and slender breeches lined the interior. Strangely, they were all my exact size.

“How did they manage this?”

I scrunched my nose, sifting through the clothes until I found a silken gown similar to the one I came adorned in. I dressed quickly, standing in front of the mirror to see myself. The gown hugged my curves in all the right places. I smiled, quickly put on my slippers, and fluffed my hair, leaving it hanging down.

“Skies, I’m hungry.” I bit my lip. “Where do I even go?”

“If you’re lost, Enchantress, you could just ask for help.”

I whipped around. Four small faces stared up at me. With two pairs of thin, chromatic-colored, membranous wings, they had varying colorful skin with vibrantly colored eyes. Their long hair blended into pastel hues, while their small hands ended in perfectly filed claws.

“Just what exactly are you?” I breathed.

They blinked up at me as if I had no functioning brain.

“We’re Vèrtu, Enchantress. Are you not from Elèor? Surely you’ve seen our rank before.”

Vèrtu. Angels of lower rank than Domenents. Mother taught me they were as deadly as they came off cute and cuddly. The strength of our strongest fae paled in comparison to these Vèrtu.

“Who’s we?”

The purple Vèrtu swung one arm wide while the other gripped a basket. It was then I saw the other Vèrtu appearing from nothing into visibility.
