Well, the compliment had started strong.

“Thanks. You look nice too.”

CHAPTER 10

Marco

Playing the role of a rich playboy was unfortunately as easy, and boring, as it sounded. I kept a tumbler in my hands while strolling around the room with a slightly amused smirk. A few people stopped me to chat, mostly women, and while I pretended to be interested, I never let my attention drift from Emilia.

She was dangerous and far too alluring in that gold gown that looked like it was ready to melt off her and onto the floor.

I wasn’t the only one who noticed, and I wasn’t including my brother.

Nearly all the men and women had checked her out at least once. Watching eyes dragging over her body was the hardest part to ignore. I couldn’t react. I couldn’t go to her. She was doing fine on her own, and if I intervened, it could ruin everything.

She was doing a marvelous job of appearing approachable, despite having the personality of a cactus. She mingled with the crowd, smiling and talking and giggling like this was her natural environment.

Maybe it was. I didn’t know what life was like at Pack headquarters. Maybe galas were a weekly thing.

“All good?” Javier’s voice interrupted my musings.

“He’s not here yet,” Cruz answered.

“We have eyes on his car. He’s third in line,” Derek added.

“She’s got the attention of most of the men,” Cruz whispered. “It shouldn’t take long for him to go to her.”

Dammit. He was right. I hated how little effort it took to watch her, how my eyes gravitated to her. I could sense where she was in the room without having to look.

None of us had bond marks, but I couldn’t imagine an attraction stronger than this. It certainly felt like supernatural fate pulling me toward her.

But it wasn’t.

She was just beautiful, confident, sexy, and a killer.

Of course, I wanted her. Any man would.

But I couldn’t. She was a part of our team for now, and when this was over, she’d go back home and forget about us. We didn’t live in the same worlds. I’d be a fool to forget that.

“She’s doing better than I expected,” Cruz admitted. “She looks like she belongs here.”

“It’s probably part of her training,” Derek said. “She’s a chameleon.”

“Not tonight,” I cut in. “She’s not blending in. She’s the star.”

“Very true,” Cruz agreed.

I twisted my neck to find him. He was staring at her like . . . shit. The same magnetic attraction darkened his eyes. Was he into her too?

“Enough. Pay attention,” Javier chastised, as if he wasn’t staring at her through the cameras we wore from his position at the back entrance.

I already knew he was interested in Emilia. I caught it the moment he saw her. Her defiance, strength, and attitude were the perfect match for his. With her, he saw an equal. Add her stunning looks, and she would be impossible for him to ignore.

“Next in line,” Derek’s voice filled my left ear.

If only Emilia hadn’t refused her com, then she’d have a warning our target was coming.

She didn’t seem worried, though. She actually looked like she was enjoying herself.
