It takes him about ten minutes, but soon he’s ambling towards us.

“Where have you been?” I ask.

“Researching an answer to our little problem,” he says.

Nico nods. “You find anything?”

Alec frowns. “Not really.” He shoves his hands into his pockets. “Giovanni told me to stay out of it.” The wrinkle between his brows deepens. “Says to focus on our own business.”

Well, that’s irritating as fuck. Everything this family does is our business. Fuck Giovanni.

We sit at the little table and lean in, mindful of any lurking passersby that could hear us.

“What do you make of that?” Nico asks, crossing his arms against his chest.

“I don’t know,” Alec says. “But I don’t like it. I don’t like it one bit.”

We both nod.

There’s something going on and I need answers. Especially if it concerns Christina. This is getting insane.

Well. I hated that.

I did ask to go back to college but coming back after a mid-semester break is like parachuting directly into Hell.

The day wasn’t nearly the reprieve I was searching for. All I feel is intense pressure weighing me down.

I slump in my dining room chair and try to fake a smile but my appetite is gone and I’m feeling worn out.

I push the food around my plate instead of eating it.

The only part that I really enjoyed was when Nico, Enzo, and I made things official. They care about me, and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I smile to myself.

“How was your first day back?” Albert asks, watching me carefully.

“It was fine,” I say.

It’s not a lie. It was fine, even if the only parts of the day I liked were his sons sticking their tongues down my throat in the cafeteria.

“I’m glad,” Albert says, cutting into his steak and taking a bite of a small piece. “Did you, uh,” he glances over at my mother who nods her head in encouragement to continue, “Connect with all of your professors? Get a plan worked out for continuing your coursework?”

I shrug. “No, but I will by the end of the week.”

Nico’s hand grips my thigh beneath the table.

I jerk back in my chair, pretending to choke on my water when I feel their eyes on me. I set down the glass and cough into my hand.

Enzo pats my back and I nearly double over. My cheeks are burning hot.

“That’s wonderful,” my mother says. She cuts into her meat, the sound grating against the porcelain.

One of the guards moves against the wall, coming over to whisper something in Albert’s ear and then walking away.
