I fight the toxic thoughts swirling in my mind about her—a misdirected barrage of repressed trauma. I silence the voice that says she deserves to be in this place because of who she was before I took her. I rein in the thoughts that encourage me to walk out now, and I take a step forward.

As my broad frame comes into the light, Victor turns to face me. I revel in the shock coloring his pale face. “Kane, what the hell are you doing?” he asks.

“I made a mistake,” I say, “and I’ve come to fix it.”

Ivan makes a move for a gun sitting on a nearby shelf, but I raise my pistol and aim at him before he gets more than a few steps. He freezes. My truth is written on my face. If they move a fucking muscle, I’ll shoot.

“Hey, dropout. Be a peach and restrain Victor.” I nod toward a roll of duct tape on a wooden table.

“Fuck you, Kane,” she says.

My eyes widen. “Would you rather hang out with them? Because I could leave.”

She scoffs and climbs off Ivan’s lap. He tries to hang on to her, probably to use her as a human shield, but she thrashes her heel against his shin until he lets go. She grabs the tape from the table and heads toward Victor, who sneers at her before putting his hands behind his back. With a wide grin, she begins winding the tape around his wrists.

“You’re dead, Kane,” Ivan says from the chair.

“Tape Ivan too,” I say to Aurora, gesturing toward the man with my chin. “And cover his mouth.”

When Victor’s hands are secured, I step closer to him. He has to look up at me because he’s considerably shorter.

“How did you find me?” I whisper.

“Do you think we would be stupid enough to allow you to drive into the sunset with something we purchased before it was paid off? I installed a tracker beneath the driver’s step.”

I nod and step away from him.

Once she’s finished one hell of a tape job, I walk over to Ivan, pocket my pistol, and draw my knife. Gripping his dark hair, I crane his neck and ignore his muffled pleas as I sink the blade into his throat. I begin twisting the handle, and I don’t stop until a spray of blood jets across all of us.

“No!” Victor screams. “We’ve always been good to you, you fucking bastard!”

Unfortunately, that’s true, and I’m destroying our little arrangement to save the girl. The one who’s looking at me with complete hatred.

I walk up to Victor, a smile on my face because I’m fully intoxicated by all the blood at this point. I tighten my grip on my knife and, with a quick motion, I jab it in the soft space beneath his chin. Blood fills his mouth, and judging by the way he struggles to speak, I can only assume I pushed hard enough to spear his tongue as well. He drops to the floor and begins writhing around.

I thought I had eliminated the risk until a solid punch wrecks my jaw. I shake my head and turn toward Aurora. She’s clutching her fist because she really used all her effort to hit me. I push her against the wall.

“Don’t ever fucking hit me, dropout.”

“I have the right to be mad. You fucking sold me! You asshole!”

“I got you back, didn’t I?”

“Fuck you!” she screams.

“We’ll talk about this later. Right now, I need to finish this.”

I step closer to Victor, jab the knife into his neck, then use my boot to put pressure on the handle until the blade’s tip hits the concrete floor. Blood pours from his mouth, and the jerking turns to twitching before he finally stills.

I turn to Aurora and hold out my hand. “Let’s get out of here.”

She sets her jaw and balls her hands into tight fists at her sides. “I’m not going anywhere with you.”

Chapter Thirty-One

Aurora

My chest rises and falls with a blast of panicked anger. A ribbon of blood stands stark across my chest, but it’s nothing compared to the river of red washing over Kane. He’s covered in the stuff. He takes a step toward me and reaches for my hand, but I pull away. The look of hurt on his face almost makes me want to comfort him, but then I remember what he’s done to me.
