The attack started outside, and I knew what I had to do.

Stephano was going to be my bodyguard, my shield, my driver, and my key to freedom.

I made him climb ahead of me, down a shaky ladder. We got to the bottom, just as the DEA force was smashing into the front of the warehouse complex.

I told Stephano that without my protection, the task force would definitely kill him. It was easy for him to believe me. If I needed to get away, then maybe he could escape, too. He was already terrified of the power I had inside his mind.

Stephano took me out back to an armored all-terrain vehicle.

He drove. I sat behind him.

We broke out through the fence at the back of the compound before the DEA even knew I was gone.

Chapter Seventeen

“How will I ever find her now, Saul?”

Saul puts a hand on my arm.

“Eve, you haven’t had to find her yet. She’s found you. If you only stand still enough, I’m certain she’ll find you again.”

Wolf comes to the church house. That must be a first for him, too.

He tells us that he’s made some progress with the IDs of my mother’s that Blake had copies of.

“She’s been in contact with some pretty high-grade forgers. Some of the people who made these for her are seriously hard to find.”

“Obviously she made some good use of the times she was sent out to work for the DEA.”

“Mm. These are some pretty major underworld connections, though.”

I sit next to him. “So, what have you learned?”

“Well, honestly, that was the thing that blew me away. But what else? Well, the main thing is not all that much use,” he looks up at me.

“Go on.”

“She hasn’t used any of these for a long time, except for one.”

Saul nods. I don’t think I get it.

“It means that she’s using identities, really top-drawer IDs, like burner phones. Use them once or twice, burn it, and on to the next one.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning that she’s not only very well-connected, but she’s also really scared of them finding her.”

“Mm,” I say, “Hold the front page.” I look at him, “Any more?”

He looks sheepish. “The last of these Identities she used was in Portland.”

I rub his back. I know it took him a lot to find out what he did.

Steele calls and I ask him, “Are you coming by?”

I can’t keep the enthusiasm out of my voice. “That was what I wanted to talk about.”

“Oh?”
