“Yes. It’s what I said. And I said it first.”

Olivier folds his arms. “No you didn’t.” Then, with a sigh, “Anyway, it doesn’t matter. We’re a team.”

“We’re a team.”

“Yes.” Olivier presses his lips together. “But I said it first. And best. The Mega Phone!”

“It’s perfect.” Neal smiles.

“Let me make a graphic.”

“I’ll take it up.”

“No, I’ll take it.”

“It doesn’t matter who takes it.”

“No. Good. So I will.”

“No, you…”

Olivier’s lips tighten and thin. “It doesn’t matter who takes it up. Ms. Princess Boudreaux will take it on to the stage, anyway.”

“She’ll probably rewrite it. You know what she’s like.”

Olivier waves his arm. “Never mind the graphics. They can use what they’ve got. I’m writing the hooks, and I’m putting it into an envelope. Here. Girl. Yes. You. Come on…”

“Me?”

He nods. Oh, joy! Reluctantly, I step over the ring of fresh debris.

“Take this envelope.” Olivier holds the red envelope out to me.

“Take this one, too,” Neal hands me a second red envelope. Olivier glowers at him, but he makes an angelic smile. “Princess Boudreaux can choose.”

They tell me to go to the forty-second floor, find Marina Boudreaux, and give her the envelopes.

I could tell them it’s not my job. But it will get me away from these two.

Mischievously, I ask, “Should I call her ‘Princess Boudreaux’?”

Olivier laughs. “If you want her to throw you out of the forty-second-floor window, certainly.”

As I’m leaving, I hear Neal ask, “Olivier, you want to go up? See the show? Find out which hook line she picks?”

“No. I’ve had The Main Event for today. I’ll find out in the morning.”

“If The Main Event lasts that long. This place is going to be toast if she doesn’t get her golden investor.”

“Ah, yes. Her secret angel finance plan.”

Chapter Five

Ella

The crowded top floor of The Main Event’s tower bustles with people. Workers in overalls, uniformed servers, and technicians with tablets criss-cross, making last-minute preparations. A huge room is decked with bars and tables, hung with lights and kitted like a ballroom on a starship. A sloped runway ramps from a stage.

A waft of expensive scents rolls across the lit dance floor. From the far side of the room, shiny, glittering guests flow in. With bright teeth and glowing smiles, all the guests are dressed like they’re coming to a movie premiere.
