“Y-yes, I’m fine. Thank you.”

I nodded and took her hand into mine. “I hate for our afternoon to end like this, but I’m gonna get her home. We’ll see y’all later.”

We all exchanged hugs before I led her out, hoping Dedrick was still outside.

The ride home was silent. She didn’t say it, but I felt like she was upset with me, though I didn’t know why. Cheyanne was out of her damn mind if she thought I was going to let anyone disrespect her.

When we arrived, I had my driver to park between both complexes, figuring she’d want to be alone.

“Do you… want me to walk you up?” I asked.

She looked over at me with a pout. “You’re not coming up?”

I held back my smile. “I wasn’t sure you’d want me to. You seem upset, so I wanted to give you space.”

“I’m not upset with you; I’m upset with the situation. Upset that I had to even see his face.”

“I know we can’t control who shows up in public places, but tell me what I can do to keep you from being affected by it.”

She huffed and looked out of the window. “You mean other than hitting anyone who disrespects me?”

“Besides that.”

I saw her cheek lift from her smile. “I didn’t want you getting out of character because of me, but I really do appreciate you sticking up for me, babe.”

“It’s my character to protect the woman I love, and I’ll do that however I need to.”

Her head slowly turned in my direction. “Come up with me.”

“Okay.” I told Stan he could call it a night after we got out. I had a feeling we’d be spending the rest of the evening in bed. She seemed a bit lighter now, but in case it wasn’t easy for her to shake seeing Dedrick, I wanted to make sure I’d be at her disposal.

Three Days Later

Cheyanne set the plate filled with various breakfast foods in front of me as I sat at the island.

“Enjoy.” She placed a kiss to my lips that I was too distracted to fully return. “What’s wrong?”

I didn’t want to tell her, but I knew I had to. Running my hand over my face, I set my phone on the island. “We should eat before I tell you.”

“Uh oh. That bad?”

“Not to me, but it may be to you.”

“Okay.” She agreed, and I was glad she listened to me. I didn’t want the news to ruin us enjoying the breakfast she prepared, especially since she didn’t cook often. I smiled as I thought back to a conversation we had when we’d first come back home from Sri Lanka and confirmed our commitment to each other.

“Should we discuss your expectations of me?” I asked as we lay in bed.

Her fingers were connected with mine, and her head was in my lap as she gazed at the ceiling.

“Yes, if you’re ready to discuss your expectations of me.”

“You’re already doing, giving, and being what I need.”

Cheyanne chuckled. “You mean to tell me you don’t have a list of things you want me to bring to the table?”

I released a bark of laughter. “Baby, I build the table and expect you to sit down and feast. That’s all.”

She turned on her side to face me. “I want to make you as happy as you make me. I want to give to you like you give to me. There has to be more that you want than just… me.”
