By the time I made it to the office, I still hadn’t woken up fully. Sleeping without Cheyanne had been hell. It was crazy how something, or someone, could have such a monumental effect on your life in just a few days. Before sleeping with her in my arms, I slept perfectly. Last night, I tossed and turned and found no relief. The only thing that kept me from smoking or drinking to relax was the fact that I didn’t want to let a substance be a balm for the ache I had for her. I wanted to feel every pang of missing my woman, because it would make sure I did everything within my power to keep her in my life and in my bed.

Something told me Cheyanne was going to bring her pretty ass to the office this morning, even though I told her not to. I was hoping she took the time to rest, but if she didn’t, I wouldn’t blame her. She took as much pride in and was just as dedicated to my business as I was, and I’d forever be grateful to her for that.

Learning about her past was like getting missing pieces to a puzzle. I knew it had to be something drastic to lead to her grandfather adopting her, but I wasn’t expecting what she’d said about her parents to be the case. I could respect her wanting to carve her own path and not rely on her family’s name, because I was the same way. I could have easily worked at my family’s corporation but decided against it. Knowing that she wanted that freedom further confirmed I made the right decision by making her my co-buyer. Not just because we’d split the seven-figure commission, but because it would be the first purchase in her portfolio.

I saw something in her, and I thought after the London trip, she finally saw it in herself. Cheyanne was truly one of a kind. She didn’t just have an eye for art but for good investments in general. We could shake the world up if we continued this buying partnership.

A smile lifted the corners of my mouth when I rounded the corner and saw Amy at her desk.

“Hi, Mr. Jones,” she said in a chipper tone. “Welcome back.”

“Hey, Amy. It’s good to be back.” My eyes shifted to the left at Cheyanne’s office. “Have you heard from Cheyanne yet?”

“Um… I’m not supposed to say either way.”

Chuckling, I continued toward my office. “That’s all I need to hear. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Can I get you anything, sir?”

“Coffee, please. Get a tote and pastries for the office. And that tea Cheyanne likes, since I’m sure she’ll be in soon.”

“You’ve got it.”

I took the next several minutes returning a few phone calls that I’d neglected to prioritize before the trip, since it was taken on such short notice. Regardless of how important my business was, I wasn’t going to rush through the trip when it provided a chance for Cheyanne and me to bond and connect on a deeper level.

There was a soft knock on the door before Cheyanne came in.

“Hi,” she spoke quietly.

“Shut the door and come here.”

“Don’t yell at me,” she requested, voice tiny and sweet. “I didn’t come in yesterday, so I rested a little.”

Yelling at her was the last thing on my mind, because I knew her ass was going to be here, just like me.

“I love that you care about my business as much as I do,” I told her, setting her on my lap. “I’m not going to yell at you for that.”

“Then wha—”

Grabbing her face, I covered her lips with mine and kissed her until we needed to come up for air. Between her moans, soft sighs, and smiles, I was a few kisses away from locking the door and spreading her wide atop my desk. With my forehead against hers, I pulled in a deep, shaky breath.

“I missed you, beautiful.”

“I missed you too.”

“I slept like shit. I need you in my bed tonight.”

“Okay.” She agreed, wrapping her arms around my neck. “I stayed the night with Papa, so I didn’t get the best sleep either. I enjoyed spending the day with him, but when I tried to get to sleep, I wanted to be with you.”

I wanted to meet her grandfather but would continue to go at her pace. Just because things had changed between us, that didn’t mean her triggers and traumas had magically disappeared. I wanted Cheyanne to know she could trust me with her and that I would have no ulterior motives throughout our relationship. However long that took, I’d wait. Because it wouldn’t be a matter of time; it would be a matter of my effort. If I wanted her to trust me, I’d have to be a man worthy of her trust.

“I want to take you out tonight,” I said. “Do you have plans?”

“Nothing that can’t be rescheduled, though I feel like I shouldn’t say that because I don’t want you to think I’m too available for you.”

Her teasing smile and tone had me gripping her ass and pulling her closer. “Baby, I’ll clear my schedule and the world for you. You could never make yourself too available for me.”
