“What if it’s a girl?”

“Those are unisex names.”

“Okay, so…no. I’m okay with a fierce name, but not a creepy one.”

I shrugged. “Whatever. Hey, I’m sorry you’ve had to go through all this because of me and my dick.”

“What?!” she laughed.

“I’m serious. You seem so worn out. I just…I’m getting my shit snipped after the baby gets here. I don’t want you to have to go through this again. Plus, this gentle fucking we’ve been doing is good, and the pussy is still pussying, but I miss giving it to you like I wanna give it to you.”

“I miss it, too,” she sighed.

“Lilith?”

“Yeah?”

“I love you. I mean that.”

“I love you, too. All those months ago when you were terrorizing me, I never would’ve thought you’d turn out to be so sweet to me.”

“Only to you, baby. Only to you.”

I didn’t want a baby shower because I was seven and a half months pregnant, and I looked like it. Instead, I opted for a small family gathering with good food, good music, and meaningful gifts during which we’d do the gender reveal. The doctor had given us the ultrasound results in a sealed envelope that I’d given to Denita. She, in turn, passed it on to Pauline who’d agreed to bake us a cake, making the inside either pink or blue. I was too excited to cut that cake.

But first, everyone gathered at our house—Daddy, Denita, Pauline, Umber, Memphis, and the Gutierrez twins who my folks believed to be Ray’s employees. I guess that was true, though. Valentina even came, bringing with her a ton of delicious, homemade tamales and the cutest little white bedding set for the baby’s crib.

I was sitting in the living room watching my father and Ray engage in a lively conversation when Umber sidled beside me on the sofa.

“You look happy, content,” she said, grasping my right hand.

“I am. I’m very happy. Tired, but happy,” I replied.

“You know, I never saw you as the type to like bad boys.”

I frowned a little as I looked at her. Umber was so pretty, but she wore a permanent resting bitch face. I never understood why, given how sweet she was most of the time.

“You think Ray is a bad boy?”

She rolled her eyes. “I realize I’m the youngest, but I’m still forty. I know a bad boy when I see one. I just thought that was more Memphis’s type since she’s so damn mean. You always favored the mild-mannered guys. Ray definitely ain’t mild-mannered and I’m convinced he’d wrestle a bear over you.”

I chuckled. “He would. He’s a protector. I think that’s what I love most about him. The bad boy part? That’s just an added amenity.”

“I get that. He’s handsome and he looks like he knows his way around a coochie.”

“Umber!” I scolded.

“I’m forty, remember, and you know I ain’t no virgin.”

“I do know that. So, you seeing anybody?”

“Not at the moment. I’m still enjoying my solitude for now. When the time is right, I’ll get back out there, or maybe Mr. Right will just fall in my path while I’m hiking one day. Who knows?”

“You don’t get scared doing that solo hiking stuff? I’d be petrified.”

“No, because I own like three guns, and I know how to use them.”

“Damn, you too?” I mumbled.
