“Oh, shit! What?!” That was an unseen Umber.

Memphis’s eyes found me, and she yelled, “There you are! Tell your man to let us in!”

“Yes, Daddy. She’s fine…she looks good.” Umber covered her phone with her hand and told me, “He’s worried. He said for you to call him as soon as we leave.”

I nodded in response.

Umber was sitting at my little bistro table opposite Memphis, both of them displaying their signature styles. Umber, the tallest of us King sisters, wore a jogging suit, her preferred attire. Memphis wore a very nice jumpsuit that hugged her curves and mirrored her fierce persona. Unfortunately, Ray sat next to me on the couch, damn near on top of me, tightly gripping my hand as I chatted with Memphis.

“So…how’s the esthetician business going, Mem?” I was asking Memphis, trying to appear cool, calm, and normal when I actually wanted to scream, “Help!”

“Same old, same old. Facials and more facials. Been getting a lot of new threading clients lately, though,” Memphis responded.

“Oh, nice! Keeping that high-ass rent paid, huh?”

“You know it. So…where did y’all meet?” Memphis inquired, her attention now on Ray.

“Believe it or not, right outside in the alley. I own the building next door,” he replied.

For fear of saying the wrong thing, I just kept my mouth shut because he owns what?!

“Really?! So, you’re into real estate, Ray?” Memphis probed.

“Yep. Just gave my baby here a new building for her boutique.” To really lay it on, he lifted his free hand and caressed my cheek.

I truly despised this motherfucker.

“Oh, that’s nice!” Umber chimed in, her focus now off the phone and in the room with the rest of us.

He leaned in close to my ear, his whisper barely perceptible to me. “Tell me to stop.”

When I turned to face him because I wasn’t sure what else to do, he kissed me.

On the mouth.

Again.

And I liked it…again.

My lord.

I had lost my damn mind!

“Anything for my Lilith. Hey, I need to make a phone call. It was nice meeting you ladies,” Ray said. Fixing his eyes on me, he added, “I’ll be in the bedroom, love,” while giving my hand a very tight squeeze.

I nodded and watched him leave the room. When I looked at my sisters, they were both staring at me.

“Damn, girl. That must be some good dick. You looked like you were scared for him to leave!” Umber blurted.

I frowned. “What?”

“Nah, she looks like she’s pissed about something. I think we’re cockblocking, Umber,” Memphis said.

I shook my head. “Y’all are silly.”

“And you’re immature! You could’ve told me you were in here nesting with a new man instead of ignoring me and worrying me to death,” Umber said.

“Not just a new man. An upgrade,” Memphis corrected, “and that’s why we should leave. Lil, call Daddy, and don’t forget about his birthday party. It’s coming up.”
