Her expression shifted to a curious one, and the room fell silent until she suggested, “Why don’t you lie on the sofa instead of sitting on the floor in here?”

“Gotta keep my eye on you, baby.”

“What you think I’ma do? Climb out the window? Sneak out the front door?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I do know you got a smart-ass mouth for someone who thinks I’m going to kill them.”

This time, she shrugged. “Maybe I’m trying to speed this shit up.”

I raised an eyebrow, shaking my head. “Baby, that smart mouth don’t make me wanna kill you. It makes me wanna fuck the shit outta you. I’m wondering what else that mouth can do.”

She gasped and I laughed.

“Get some sleep, baby. I’ma be right here. Don’t worry,” I said, moving to turn the lamp off.

“That’s not reassuring at all,” she muttered in the darkness. “Hell, I may never sleep again.”

That made me howl with laughter.

I knew she was on some shit when she suddenly got friendly and extremely cooperative. It’d been about three weeks since I moved in, and I’d just asked her what she wanted for dinner.

She shrugged. “I could cook for us. I mean, I do know how to cook. You’ve been spending a lot of money on takeout.”

As she sat on her cream-colored sofa, I eyed her, took in her cocoa brown skin exposed in her tiny shorts. I could see her breasts through the thin t-shirt she wore, her nipples erect. Her pretty face bore faux innocence. Her hair was stacked on top of her head in a high ponytail. She was so beautiful to me…and fine, fucking desirable as hell, and she knew it. Hell, she knew that I knew it.

Licking my lips, I asked, “What you tryna cook?”

Lifting her hands, she blinked a few times. “Whatever you want.”

Oh, she was good.

“You know how to cook steak? I prefer a wagyu ribeye, medium rare with a baked potato and some well-seasoned asparagus. That right there? That almost tastes better than pussy,” I told her.

“I could do that,” she softly said. From my seat at the little dining table, I could see her pulse thrumming in her neck.

“Do what? Let me eat your pussy? I bet it tastes as good as you smell.”

“No! I…you know what I meant.”

“Oh, you meant the steak. I’d love for you to cook that meal for me, but Lilith?”

Her eyebrows flew up. “Yes?”

“I’m a lot of things, but I ain’t dumb. You ain’t about to poison me, love. Now, what do you want for dinner?”

Her face dropped.

“And you better not say ‘nothing.’ You know I can’t stand that shit.”

“Go to hell, Ray,” she bit out.

“Oh, I’m sure I will in due time.”

“Get up. Get dressed.”

His voice shook me awake.
