Heat courses through me and flushes my cheeks. I look away, trying to hide my blush. It’s then I realize we haven’t returned to my room. “Where are we?”

“My room.”

“Why?” I ask, moving from my spot beside him to walk around his room.

“I didn’t want to leave you alone. I know you hate being locked up there.” He watches me closely as I walk around, taking in the details of his private space. “I wanted to spend some more time with you, and give you a chance to ask any other questions you may still have.”

A laugh escapes me. “I have a million more questions, Kyson.”

“Then ask away.” He spreads his thighs wide, taking a position of dominance and displaying his power.

Turning away from him I finger the spines of the novels on his bookshelf. I need to regain my composure and looking at him is a major distraction.

“How old are you?”

“Thirty-two. But I have been that age for over one hundred years.”

“How many people live here?” I press on, trying not to show my shock.

“Around ten most of the time.” His voice is soothing and calm as he speaks. “Sometimes we have visiting covens over but not in the past two years. And some of our coven roam around more than others.”

“Am I in danger?” I face him, needing to see his face when he answers me.

“No.” He leans forward and rests his arms on his knees as he stares at me intently. “You’re a consort. My consort. No one will ever harm you.”

My knees feel weak at the vehemence and honesty behind his words. Forcing my legs to work I take a seat across from him.

“Explain what makes me so special.”

“Every vampire only has one chance at real love. Some find their consort soon after their turning and others wait hundreds of years.” He pauses to make sure I am still with him. “The Oracle told me about you a year ago. She said the flame that haunts my dreams would also be the one to set my soul ablaze.”

“You dream about me?”

Kyson chuckles sadly. “Every night since I was changed. Since before you were born, for more than one hundred and fifty years. Every single night, without fail.”

My hand flies to my mouth, trying to cover my gasp.

“I’ve known you forever. My heart and soul call out to you.”

“Kyson…” I start, even though I’m not sure what I want to say.

“I know this is a lot and it’s going to be hard to take it all in. I’m not asking you just to blindly accept everything that comes out of my mouth, but I am asking for a chance to prove everything I am saying.”

“And what then?”

“Let’s take this one step at a time.” He smiles at me. “Once you accept everything about me and this new life, then we can work on the next step.”

“And if I don’t want to be here after you’ve shown me everything?”

He’ll probably kill me and drop me in a shallow grave in the forest. I mean, you can’t make the existence of vampires known and then just let people walk around telling anyone who will listen.

“I can’t force you to stay here,” he says sadly. “And if you choose to leave, Aziel will wipe your memories. Everything up to the moment before you arrived here. You’ll forget about all of this. For you, it will be like none of this ever happened.”

Why does the thought of never knowing Kyson break my heart?
