He shakes his head but never takes his gaze off me. “Tonight is about you.”

Another woman would probably be self-conscious to eat in front of a man like Kyson but I am not that girl. I don’t hesitate before digging back into the best lasagna I have ever tasted and I don’t stop until I have finished every last bite.

“What is that look for?” I ask when I finally direct my attention back to the man in front of me.

His gaze has darkened, and his features are tight. He is gripping the stem of his wineglass so tight I am surprised he hasn’t broken it yet.

“You don’t want to know.” His voice is lower than I have ever heard it before, sending a shudder up my spine.

“And you promised to answer all my questions.”

He hesitates for a moment before setting down his glass and leaning closer toward me. “You make these sounds when you eat something you really enjoy. They’re the same ones you make when you dream of me. It drives me insane.”

Trying not to let him see the impact his words have, I ask, “How do you know what I dream about?” Why the hell is my voice so sultry?

“Because I have the same dreams.” Taking my hand in his, he runs the pad of his thumb over my pulse point. Lust courses through me and I cross my legs to stave off the onslaught.

None of what he says makes any sense. How can we have the same dream? Besides, I’ve always had these dreams. It is only recently that my mystery man has been replaced with Kyson. Being around him the whole time has altered who my mind sees and because I am attracted to him, he now has the starring role. That’s all. I know I am lying to myself but the six months before my impromptu kidnapping don’t count.

“Why am I here?” I whisper, asking the one question I don’t think he will answer.

Kyson’s gaze scans my face, looking for I don’t know what. He sighs softly before speaking. “You are here, Scarlet, because you are my mate. The only female I will ever be able to love. The only person that can ever complete me.”

Something niggles at my mind. Fear pumps through my veins at his words and the look on his face. This man is a predator, probably a psycho, and I am the center of his obsession. My heart rate spikes as my fight-or-flight instinct kicks in.

Pulling my hand from his grasp I feel a slightly nervous laugh bubble up within me. “You’re insane.” I need to get away from here. From him.

A sad smile graces his lips before he stands. “Do you want to leave?” he asks.

“I want to have the option.”

“Then go. Run, Scarlet, just know that I will find you no matter where you go.” He nods toward the woods and I don’t have to be told twice.

Jumping from my chair I am glad I chose to wear my Converse with this dress instead of the pretty shoes I found in my room. I take off at breakneck speed, pumping my arms and legs as hard as I can. My breathing is already labored because I am as unfit as can be but I press forward even with the burning in my lungs.

Turning my head I look for him, trying to gauge how close he is to catching me but Kyson is still standing beside the table, sipping the last of his wine. He really is confident that I won’t get away. I push harder, needing to put as much space between us as possible. I can smell the pine trees in front of me and freedom is within my grasp.

Suddenly, Kyson appears no more than ten feet in front of me. I stumble, losing my pace before coming to a stop. Sadness covers his features.

“How did you get in front of me? You’re not even out of breath?” I grumble, wheezing.

“I’m fast.” I glare at him. Not a hair out of place or a wrinkle in his perfectly pressed white shirt.

This isn’t right. I don’t have all the answers so I am not seeing the full picture.

“Ask me,” Kyson says, continuing to stare at me. “Ask me the one question you’ve wanted to ask since the first time you saw me.”

Memories of the past few days crash back into me. The dreams, his smell having such an effect on me, the silent way he moves, and how fast he is. The fact that he dresses and speaks like he’s from somewhere altogether different. The fact that he basically knows what I am thinking or feeling at any given moment. My mind is running through everything as he patiently waits for me.

A million different questions run through my mind but only three words leave my lips.

“What are you?”
