“If it’s a gift, then it’s the best one I’ve ever received, and I don’t know if anything you come up with in the future could ever top this one.” I slip my palm behind her head, drawing her to me for a closed mouth kiss. It’s chaste, but I nip at her bottom lip before I release her.

“Oh, I don’t know,” she says, toying with one of my curls. “I can think of a few things that might make you even happier.”

I scoff. “More memorable than this night? What could you possibly mean?”

Her eyes sparkle with glee.

“How about if I gave you an heir?”

EPILOGUE

MAK

Without any notice at all, The Fickle Dominion blipped into our territory from the borderlands with an urgent request for an audience with me.

When Captain Darra appears on the streets of Ta’Nak Annir, I’m shocked to see a human female walking alongside him. At first, I don’t recognize her because her thick hair is white in color, something I didn’t know humans grew naturally. I mentally review the colorings I’ve seen, and aside from Kalla’s flame-haired mate, they’ve all had shades of brown and black. Then it hits me as I get a closer look at her face; it’s the same female that Frankie had asked me to find. I had burned her features in my mind since it was so important to my mate. And here she is in the flesh, safe and sound. She wanders around our new home with a curious gaze, scanning the surroundings.

But even as I’m rejoicing for this news that will please Frankie, I start to panic.

Because there’s a human female wandering the surface of Kar’Kal without a care in the world.

The captain I sent to find her is kicking a pebble, unconcerned, as I make a furious beeline for him.

“What the rut are you thinking?” I demand, rushing to grab Darra by the elbow. The female is out of earshot, poking her head into one of the abandoned clay houses. “Don’t tell me you had no idea of the dangers non-Kar’Kali are in when they set foot on the surface!”

Darra casually pokes my hand away with a smile on his face.

“She’s in no danger at all. My new bot engineer,” he says, flourishing a hand in her direction. “Isn’t she lovely? She asked for a job, and I graciously hired her.”

“Darra, I’m serious. Maybe the cliffs are at a high enough altitude that we’re currently protected? But that can’t be… In any case, you need to get that human off the surface immediately, and that’s an order. In the name of the spirit, I ask you to rescue her, and you put her in direct danger?”

The female raises her head, having noticed the urgent tones of our conversation. She jogs over with an air of concern.

“Everything alright over here?

“Everything’s great,” Darra says, bouncing on his heels. “Mak, this is Ilay. Ilay, this is Mak. He’s the one that made the arrangements for me to find you on behalf of the queen.”

“I’m so grateful to you and anyone else that was involved in helping me get out of the borderlands. I’d love to thank the queen personally, but if she’s too busy, I’d understand,” she says.

But as she’s speaking, my eyes are on Darra. The way he’s looking at her might seem insignificant to most, but I know the male well, and I know a mated Kar’Kali when I see one. Except he didn’t introduce her to me as a mate or mention it when I directly asked him. I squint with suspicion but say nothing.

“You’re underestimating how well-connected I am,” Darra says. “You see, the person we’re talking to right now is the king himself. I’m sure he can manage to slip us into his mate’s schedule, right Mak?”

The female startles, then bows her head awkwardly. “Oh! Uh, hi, Your… Majesty?”

“Darra, you asshole,” she hisses at the captain. “You could’ve told me that we were meeting royalty right now.”

“I told you just now,” he says smoothly.

I wave my hand. “No formalities necessary. Follow me, she’ll be thrilled to see you.”

“Let me grab my bag,” she says, turning back to find the backpack she had dropped near their parked skimmer.
