Hey Ty. Come see me today when you get in. Just want to go over your plan for the next couple weeks and catch up.

Fuck.

And now all those anxious feelings come rushing back in, and the thoughts I’ve been trying to keep out all week are taking over.

I’m behind. I’m not ready.

This is the most important fight I’ve ever had, and I need the win for LFA. And even though I’ve progressed and am now taking light hits to the side of the head in a controlled drill, I’m still shaky. And that’s not fucking good enough.

I toss my phone on the bench and drop down to my stool. I need to get over this. Once I can take a hit, everything else will be fine. That’s the only thing I’m getting hung up on. My grappling is solid, my attack is strong… but I need to be able to get hit and redirect without any hesitation.

My eyes drift back to my phone, and I sigh. Right now, though… I need something else.

I pick up my phone, tapping out a text.

Hey. How’s work

The bubbles immediately start dancing, and within seconds I have a response. And I regret everything.

Luca

*shocked face emoji*

Did you just… INITIATE a text to me??

With an open-ended question about MY DAY?

Omg. This is huge.

Tyler. I’m so proud.

I shouldn’t have done this.

And now I’ll never do it again.

Luca immediately starts texting back, and I’m tempted to lock my screen and ignore him. But for some reason, I don’t.

Fuck that, this is fantastic.

So, because I have hockey tonight and won’t be at the gym, you’re going to miss me. I get it.

I’m just between classes, so I’m more than happy to fill you in on my day now so you’re not left waiting in suspense. Buckle in, it’s a lot.

So this morning on the playground before school started, I made an EPIC save. One of the kindergarteners almost took an unintentional nosedive off the slide. But nope. I was there. Caught him. THEN one of the third graders was SO close to getting smacked right in the face by a rogue soccer ball, but guess who deflected it? That’s right. Me. So, at this point, I’m feeling like a goddamn superhero.

His texts continue to stream in at a rapid pace, outlining every detail about his day so far. And as I watch them roll in, with no time for me to respond to anything even if I wanted to… I smile.

Insufferable.

But just what I needed.

I knock on Max’s open office door, and he looks up from his desk.

“Hey, Ty,” he says with a smile. “Come on in.”

“Hey.” I enter his office, sitting on one of the chairs and set my bag by my feet.
