“I love him,” Eloise said. She felt tearsfill her eyes. “I’ve loved him for a long time, and he broke myheart.”

“I know what he did, Eloise. I was there topick up the pieces.”

She swiped at her tears.“I don’t want you or Dorothy tothink I’m weak taking him back.”

Wendy frowned at her. “Why would I think you’re weak?”

“After what he said, and … how I wasafterward.”

Her mother sighed. “You know, a lot ofpeople say a lot of bad shit in the heat of the moment. I know somepeople think we only saywhat we mean, but I don’t believe that. I believe when we’re in theheat of the moment, we panic. We don’t know what to do or what tosay, and emotions take over. Passion takes over, until what we’vesaid cannot be unsaid. Now, I’m going to ask you this one finaltime. Are you playing with that man, or do you actually havefeelings for him?”

“I love him.”

“Do you want to be with him?” Wendyasked.

She nodded.

“Then eat your pancakes and cut the crap. Also, you can invite as many of his pack over as you want forChristmas. It would be nice to have a full house.”

“You’re not mad?”

“No, I’m not mad. Why would I be mad?”

“Because I’m going to forgive him.”

Her mother walked over to her and cuppedher face, tilting her head back. “This is your life and you’ve gotto live it the way youwant. You’re my daughter and if you want me to hate him, I’ll hatehim, and glare at him every chance I see him. But if you love him,and he’s going to be part of our lives and a member of our family, then I’m not going to be a bitch to him. It’s time for us to get toknow each other. I am going to be his son or daughter’sgrandmother.”

Eloise smiled. “You meanthat?”

“Honey, I’m not going anywhere. You bettertell him he has my blessing, but if he thinks for a second that I’mgoing to let him hurt you again, I’ll cut his balls off and feed them to him, or maybe hispack.” Wendy shrugged. “You shouldn’t be worried about loving aman, especially when we know he loves you too, more thananything.”

Eloise finished her plate of pancakes inrecord time. “Can I…”

“What’s all the gossip about?” Dorothyasked, stepping into the kitchen. She was still in a pair ofpajamas, yawning as she walked in.

“Eloise is going to tell Beau how much she loves him,” Wendysaid.

“It’s about time.” Dorothy dropped into achair, and seconds later Wendy placed some pancakes in front of her.

“You knew?” Eloise asked.

“Yeah, the walls on this place are thin. Weknew he was home, and we also knew he was giving you a good time. It’s nice to know you two are working it out.”

“I don’t even know if he wants to be withme,” Eloise said.

Dorothy lifted her gaze up.“Are you serious rightnow?”

“Yes, I am being serious.”

“Okay, just so we’re clear, we’re talkingabout the same guy, Beau Alpha, aka Nasty Alpha?”

Eloise smiled. “Yes, I know all about hisreputation.”

“Okay, you’re worried he doesn’t want to bewith you. I know he said some bad shit, and trust me, I’d be the first to say don’tgo back to him. But—and this is apretty big but—that man lovesyou. In the past few months, his pack has sworn loyalty to you.Regular food is constantly delivered to you at work, or even athome, and you’ve said yourself you don’t even know where thecravings are coming from, or how someone knows what you’re feeling. That is all Beau. He comes for hours at a time when his work isdone on the ranch, to stand in a haberdashery shop, to watch you.You may not pay attention to him, but I’ve seen the way he looks atyou. He even went to a Halloween party, and I can promise you, thatman has never stepped foot in a Halloween party before now. Again, all new. Beau is in love with you. He’s doing everything he can tomake it up to you. Now, he’s sneaking around every night andmorning, just to be with you. Doing everything you want, to be withyou. Don’t pretend you don’t know what this means. He loves you. Hewants to be with you. I guess the only real question is whether youlove him, and want to be with him.”

Beau finished rubbing down his horse, andheaded out toward the house. He was hungry. That morning,he’d had a full workload. He’dslept in and didn’t like sneaking out of the house while Wendy wasawake. It made it harder for him to leave, not that it was easyanyway.
