“We’re in love, so what happens now?” She watched as a smile spread across his face.

“What do you want to happen?”

“Creed, please don’t tease me. I’m being serious.”

“I’m sorry. It’s just too easy.” He gently took her hand in his. “Abbie, I do love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to marry you.”

Tears welled up in her eyes. “I want that too, but…”

“But what?”

“What about having kids? I want them, Creed.”

“Abbie—”

“Please don’t tell me you don’t want them.”

“And if I don’t?”

“Then what do we do?”

Creed stood up and began to pace. “Abbie, you have no idea how much that thought scares me. You know what happened before.”

“Creed, the chances of that happening again are slim.”

“But it’s still possible. It’s not uncommon.”

“That doesn’t mean it will happen.”

“Can you guarantee it won’t? Look, Abbie, I know you might think I’m overreacting, but it frightens me. The slightest possibility of it happening is enough for me to not want to take that risk.”

“So, now what?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know.”

“I see.”

“What do you see?”

“We’re at an impasse.”

Creed sat back down on the couch, took her hand again, and looked into her eyes.

“I love you, Abbie. We can work through this.”

“How? We can’t start a marriage without agreeing on our future.”

“So, what do you propose?” Creed stood up, put his hands on his hips and glared at her.

“For now, can you please just take me home?” She got up, walked to the kitchen, and put on her coat.

“Abbie—”

“What? Can you honestly tell me that you want children?”

“No.”

“Then please, just take me home. We both have some thinking to do.” She walked out the door, got into his truck, watched him follow and climb in. She refused to look at him as tears streamed down her face.
