Page 7 of Her Scarred Heart

“Meat,” Pryshya grumbles slapping the side of the ship. “Females appreciate meat. Julia did.”

I snort, shaking my head.

“Do not be a fool,” I say. He bristles at my rebuke, his wings opening and his tail raising partway. I arch an eyebrow at him. “When you courted her there was a shortage of food. Fresh meat was new and novel for the humans. That problem no longer exists.”

“Harumph,” he huffs. “Right.”

He rubs the back of his head and we continue walking along the length of the human shipwreck. It is hard to believe that this is only a small portion of it. How massive must this thing have been? How did they build such a wonder? The technology they had to have had is almost incomprehensible.

Tajss was, before the Devastation, a spaceport of course. But no ship I ever even heard of can compare to how massive the human generation ship must have been. Even the War Breakers of the Krixian Armada would have been dwarfed by it.

“I need something,” I say. “Something pretty. Ziva says flowers, but I am not sure.”

“Flowers,” Pryshya murmurs thoughtfully then shakes his head. “No. They are not right for this human. Flowers fade.”

I hear and agree with the wisdom in his words. Kai’s face is scarred and she hides it away, though I do not see the need. Her scars only enhance her beauty, but I think I understand her reluctance. Her beauty is different than that of the other females and I do remember, if dimly, that females like to compare themselves to other females.

“Something sparkly,” I muse.

“Reflective?” Pryshya asks.

“No, I do not think so,” I say scratching behind my horns. “She hides her face, I cannot imagine she wants reminded of the accident that left her scarred.”

“Sparkly then?”

“Sparkles are good,” I say staring out at the setting suns.

The primary is dropping below the horizon quickly at this time of year. Its last rays stretching across the boundless rolling dunes of the desert.

“We could raid the Order outpost,” he says.

His words jerk my attention to him so fast it hurts my neck.

“You know Angota and the others will never approve that,” I say.

He shrugs. “It is an idea.”

“No,” I say. “Too much risk. We don’t know how many are stationed there. We must assume they are still talking to the Eye.”

“Then we either convert them or…” He trails off leaving the rest unspoken because there is no need to spell it out. The idea of killing our Brothers in the Order is still abhorrent. They are misguided. Fooled as we all were by the Eye Kirmanda.

“Did you ever make gems?” I ask, moving the conversation away from the painful subject.

“No, how?”

“Sand,” I say, a smile spreading over my face. “Sand and heat. Come. I have an idea.”

I stride away from the ship and out into the desert.

KAI

“How has the pain been?” Kyle asks.

Kyle is serving as a ship doctor, or doing his best to. He wasn’t trained to be a doctor per se, he was a veterinarian before the crash, but he’s the best we have.

“It comes and goes,” I lie.
