I shrug. “Sure, what’s up man?”

“I don’t think… have any of you fucked any girls this trip yet?”

I hesitate a second, but only a second. I hope he didn’t notice.

“I’m not sure,” I admit. “I haven’t been too lucky.”

“Not a single one?” he says.

“There was one,” I say, which isn’t a total lie.

“Man,” he says softly. “I think I might actually win.”

“I think you might, too.” I finish making the coffee and set it to brew before turning to him, “But is that a good thing?”

He looks at me, confused. “Hell, yeah,” he says. “I mean, that bet we made? You’re not backing down?”

“Of course not,” I say. “I just mean… is fucking a bunch of strangers what you really need, Henry?”

He stares at me, and I’m well aware of the irony of this moment. Like all the other guys, I’ve spent my fair share of time chasing pussy and getting as much as I’ve wanted. But this isn’t about me, it’s about Henry.

He’s not like the rest of us. I’ve seen him get emotional, attached, and now I’m watching him flounder.

“Come on, Carter,” he says finally, laughing it off. “Just because you’re on a dry spell doesn’t mean you gotta come after me.”

“I’m serious,” I say, pressing ahead. “I don’t think you really need this, man. And I mean, those girls last night?” I make a face at him.

His expression slowly cools. “You don’t have to be an asshole just because you’re losing.”

“I don’t care about losing.”

“You don’t?” He gives me a wicked, angry grin. “Seems like you’re just a big fat fucking pussy.” He stands up suddenly.

“Henry,” I say.

“No, look, I know what you guys all think about me. I’m not as attractive, or even as successful, but I am rich as fuck. That’s what I got going for me, and I use it to get these girls. Without it, you think any of you would be my friend?”

“Of course,” I say softly. “We were friends before you got rich.”

He doesn’t want to hear it. “These girls would never touch me without my money. They don’t want my personality.”

I groan. He’s going down a bad path, I can see it already. He wants to be decent, but he just doesn’t know how. All this money is starting to skew the way he thinks and sees the world.

“Henry,” I say. “Listen to me.”

“No, I don’t feel like listening. I’ll be down by the water.” He walks over to the sliding glass door and pauses before looking back at me. “And remember, you’re all my fucking guests.”

He storms out of the room and I groan again. I think he just threatened to kick us out, which would fucking suck. That would be the end of whatever’s happening with Emily, and I definitely don’t want that.

I don’t know why I just picked that fight. I could have just let it all go on, but I can see the way Emily’s starting to look at him, and I hate it. I don’t want her to think that way about her older brother. I want her to see the guy I know.

I’m torn about what to do, but in the end, I just let him go. I’ll let him cool down and we can move on from this. If he wants to fuck around, I can’t stop him. I’m not his father. I just worry about how this is all going to end, and I have no clue what he’s thinking, or where it’ll all end.
