"No way in hell," Natalie said with a smile as she drank her wine. "Let me and Spence text each other so we don't get your blood pressure up."

Siobhan and I giggled at that comment. Nat was right. If he knew what we were talking about, he would likely want to kill me even though I didn't say anything crazy. It wasn’t like I was talking about taking her to bed tonight.

"I'm not some old man with high blood pressure," he grumbled. "Besides, I'm not the one who gets their panties in a twist anytime someone looks at Nat the wrong way."

I wouldn't react to the dig. Although he knew why I was always so defensive of Nat. Didn't he? Sure, his mind was focused on hockey and Siobhan right now, but he couldn’t have forgotten why I looked out for his sister.

Hell, he was the only friend who knew that I had a thing for her way back in the day, and that was the reason I had tried to look out for her since college.

Chapter 12

Natalie

The dinner was a complete emotional roller coaster, and I was sure that everyone felt that way. Okay, maybe not Siobhan since she knew that my brother would be all weird if we did a double date together.

Hell, I expected my brother's reaction for the most part. At least he wasn't a complete dick. But normally, he was always really chill about me dating as long as he didn’t have to see it.

Spence really put me through the wringer. To hear him actually say that he liked me back was so validating, but that was only after he said he wouldn't even think of sleeping with me. It was such a dagger to the heart. Although I believed his texts, I could understand him not wanting to sleep with me when Carter lived with him. But he didn't actually respond to the idea of maybe sleeping together in a month or so.

Yet, we were having a great night.

About midway through dinner, I knew the only way I would get to find out if Spence and I had a real connection and if there was a chance for us after tonight would be to ditch my big brother and Siobhan.

As the server cleaned up our plates, I asked, "What are our thoughts on dessert?"

"Nope," Carter said. "If you girls want some, go for it, but it's not on our diet plan."

Spencer looked down at the table but only nodded. Out of the two pro athletes, Spencer was the one most likely to break his prescribed diet. But ever since Carter moved in, Spence stopped ordering his containers of sorbet. Yes, even Spencer’s sweet tooth was healthy.

Siobhan looked at her beau and said, "I don't know about you, but I was thinking of a whole other type of dessert."

"Dude. You forbid me to have sex tonight, and I still have to hear you having it. That’s not fair," Spence said as he tossed a napkin at Carter.

"It's different when it's your little sister," Carter said as he pulled out his wallet and set it on the table. His hand never left the leather trifold.

It didn't take so long for the server to come to the table with the little receipt folder. Carter took it out of the server's hand and quickly slid a credit card inside.

Spencer pulled my chair out for me and said, "Let's go to Jokers."

It always had to be Jokers, didn't it? Why couldn't I escape that place?

I didn't want to be disagreeable, so I just nodded.

Although, I had a feeling tonight would be different. It could be the start of something real or at least get to the bottom of everything.

As we walked to the valet area, Spence asked, "Did you drive tonight?"

I shook my head. Siobhan insisted tonight would be a grand success and she was going to drive me there while Spence would drive me home.

He hooked his arm onto my waist in one of those gentlemanly moves. "Good. I can take you."

It didn't take long for the car to arrive. The valet opened both doors for us. I slid into the passenger seat of the sporty SUV. As I buckled up, Spencer got into the seat next to me.

Instead of driving off, he turned towards me and planted his lips over mine in such a possessive way. One hand was around my neck, deepening the kiss while his other arm pulled me toward him.

I loved the kiss. It was everything that I had hoped for from him. It was much like his style of hockey. Sure of himself, a little bit naughty and very forceful. I was all for it.

When he released my lips, he pulled back slowly with hooded eyes. "I've waited all night to do that."
