“Yes, you can. Daddy will keep you safe. And if anyone so much as looks at you strange, they’re dead.”

Reuben’s protectiveness was still in overdrive after everything that had happened with Darcy Rivers and his sister. He could barely let her out of his sight unless they were in his apartment. And even then, he checked in on her constantly.

And every night, he still slept with his fingers on her pulse. Not that she was really complaining.

“Now, who is in charge?”

“You are, Daddy.”

“Which means you don’t have to think or worry. You don’t need to do anything but obey Daddy.”

She snorted. “Daddy would like that.”

“Um, yes. Daddy would like that very much. And unless Little Blossom wants to join the red-butt mile-high club, she’ll obey her Daddy.”

“Little Blossom will have to kindly decline that invitation. Thank you, Daddy.”

“So polite. We’ll see how long that lasts.”

She gasped. How rude.

“Mr. Jones?” An older woman with a kind smile walked up to them. “Your plane is ready if you’d like to follow me out.”

Faith tensed, but Reuben carefully put her on her feet. Then he stood and took hold of her hand. If she was hurting him by squeezing too hard, then he didn’t let on.

She really wished that she had Colin right now, but their hand luggage was already onboard. Or that she could suck her thumb. Have Reuben’s skin.

Just get on the plane.

As they crossed the tarmac, her shaking increased.

Suddenly, Reuben paused, and she glanced up at him in surprise. But he simply lifted her up into his arms, cradling her into his chest.

“Reuben,” she protested, trying to get free.

“Stay still before I drop you,” he growled, giving her a sharp whack on her ass.

She tensed. Had anyone seen that? He’d be the death of her.

“You’d never drop me,” she told him.

“Good girl. You’re right. I wouldn’t.”

“Here you are, sir, ma’am. Have a nice flight.”

Reuben didn’t reply, he just started climbing the stairs. She wished she could raise her head from Reuben’s chest to say thanks to the nice lady. But she was starting to hyperventilate.

“Is everything all right, Mr. Jones?” a male voice asked.

Great. More people to witness her breakdown.

“I’ve told you before, call me Reuben, Alfie. And yes. I’m just going to get Little Blossom ready for the flight.”

“All right. I’ll go talk to Ralph and then I’ll be in the kitchen area. Coffee?”

“Please,” Reuben replied.

“And maybe a chocolate milk for Ms. Blossom?”
