“You think that’ll calm my mom down about missing your wedding?” Brooke and Ridge decided to elope. They grabbed Miranda and got on Marco’s private jet, flew to Las Vegas and got married.

In a funny twist of fate, Miranda also met her fiancé during that weekend. Jackson was just in the process of moving from the west coast to Illinois, so it worked out perfectly.

Shortly after that, Marco and Lexi got together, and now are married, have a baby, the works.

It seems like everyone around me found love and happiness, and I just got stuck in the misery I created for myself seven years ago.

“I don’t care about that,” Brooke bounces closer to me, ready to pull me into a hug. “I just can’t believe you married Zach. I am just so happy!MyZach, Hunter!”

“How is heyourZach, Brooke?” Miranda butts into the conversation. “He is my brother. Shouldn’t he be labeled as my Zach then?”

Brooke frowns at her best friend, mulling things over. “But I’ve known him the longest,” she pouts. “Besides, since you’re kind of like a sister to me, wouldn’t that make him my brother, too?”

Miranda gives her a stern look, then makes a point of pushing her thick framed glasses up on her nose.

“Brooke, that can’t happen,” she starts explaining, then points to me. “You are married to Hunter’s brother. That makes the two of youkind of like sisters,” she uses her fingers to make quotation marks when she uses Brooke’s words against her. “And if you’re Zach’s sister, and you are also Hunter’s sister, and now Zach and Hunter aretogether,” she enunciates, “isn’t thatkind of incestuous?”

“Ew,” Brooke crosses her arms over her chest. “I hate it when you’re right.”

“However,” Miranda continues with her logic, “now thatmybrother is married to Hunter, that means she ismysister. And since she is already your sister too, that makes you and I sisters,” she moves her hand between the two of them.

“That makes absolutely no sense, guys,” I shake my head at the two of them. I’ve always wanted to have a best friend like these two seem to be. They are just too cute together.

They both turn their heads at the same time, and just stare at me until finally Brooke breaks.

“Tell us everything! Please,” she adds as an after thought.

I turn around and walk toward Zach’s airy living room. His house really is amazing, and you can tell he’s got money. On my way to the couch, I try to come up with something, anything, that I could tell these girls to get them off my back.

In the end, I settle for the truth.

CHAPTER 29

Who are you?

Zach

My thoughts have been completely scrambled since I left my house earlier this morning. After getting a confirmation text from my banker that he had ready what I had asked him to do for me, I decided that I needed to leave. Hunter was still sleeping, and I couldn’t handle the guilt that was consuming me every time I looked at her.

“What’s gotten you thinking so hard?” Dad walks into his kitchen, freshly showered and looking dressed up, like he’s trying to impress someone. I ended up at his house after leaving the bank.

“Look at you all wide eyed and bushy tailed,” I tease him only to deflect, hoping it will throw him off my scent.

“Nice try, Zach. What’s up?” I watch as he pours himself a cup of freshly brewed coffee, then takes out a plastic zipper bag full of Grams’ cookies out of the pantry.

“I can’t believe you got all that. Did you bribe her with something to make them for you?” Grams likes to bake only for her favorite people nowadays.

“Brooke asked her for me. She happened to stop by while I was there. She’s a great girl, that one. You should’ve snatched her when you had the opportunity,” Dad teases me while taking a huge bite out of a cookie.

“Yeah, yeah,” has been my standard answer ever since the two of them met. I agree though, Brooke really is a great girl. And now we are related. Go figure.

“So spill it or get out. I’m busy,” he mumbles around a mouthful of chocolate chip cookie.

“Doing what? You’re semi retired, and I thought your health was iffy.”

“I’m meeting with the nurse…” He looks comically bashful when he says that.

“Meeting? Or dating?”
