Ironically, my cousin calls me by that same name when she notices me. I attempt to go give her a hug, but Zach’s hand on my neck stops me from advancing. I see her eyes looking me over with worry.

“We need to fly out. You guys good?” Zach talks over my head, seeming to communicate with Van, who looks just as shocked as Chloe.

“What? What do you mean you’re flying back home?” Chloe’s voice sound urgent. She can tell that something is off with us. “With Hunter? She came here with me. We’re going home together.” I would hug her right now if I could.

“Chlo,” I am almost in tears. I want to tell her about what happened last night after we got separated, about how I married Zach. “I did something…”

“You sure you want to share all the news, Hunter?” Zach stops me from saying more. He sounds scary and threatening, thing that Van catches onto as well, and calls him out on it.

“That’s between me and Hunter here,” Zach replies without remorse.

“Zach,” Chloe takes a step to get into Zach’s face, much in the same way that I got into Van’s face yesterday. “I swear to God that I will call the police on you if you don’t let Hunter talk to me right now.”

“By all means, talk.” Zach sounds condescending, but I’ll take it.

Chloe drags me to the side, her face a mask of worry and confusion.

“You need to tell me what the hell happened between last night and today,” she whispers urgently as soon as she is sure that no one can hear us. “You said last night that it was him. Did you mean the father of your baby?”

“Yes,” I nod, tears threatening to spill down my face.

“Did he know about the baby then?” That is the obvious question. I never imagined at the time that me not telling Zach about my miscarriage then would come back to bite me in the ass seven years later.

“I didn’t tell him.” Chloe’s gasp confirms my worries.

“Why not?”

“I didn’t even know I was pregnant, Chlo,” I throw my hands out, whisper yelling at her. “Not until I was losing all the blood out of my body. My roommate took me to the hospital, and they rushed me in, asked some questions, did some tests, told me I was miscarrying.”

“Oh, honey,” Chloe’s eyes get watery, her fingertips covering her lips in distress.

“I ran into Zach three days later. I had to go back to the hospital to pick up my prescription for some meds they had given me. Zach was in town with his grandmother.” My chest hurts at the memories assaulting my brain. I remember every detail of our encounter.

“And you didn’t tell him,” Chloe’s sad conclusion bounces around in my brain.

“I didn’t tell him,” I confirm with a sad shake of my head.

“Why is he mad at you now?” She sounds as flabbergasted by the whole thing as I am. “It’s not like you did it on purpose, and if you told him now, he should’ve understood that.”

“He said I killed his baby, Chlo,” I can’t even take a deep breath from the shock I feel. “He is so angry with me. And now we’re married.”

I don’t even realize what I said until I hear Chloe’s gasp of shock. I see her eyes getting big, and she turns her head to stare at Zach where he’s talking with Van.

“I don’t even know what to say. You’re married now,” she asks for confirmation.

“Yes,” I nod.

“To Zach Cavanaugh.” It’s like she can’t wrap her head around what just happened.

“Yes,” I respond robotically.

“You’re going back with him then?”

“I feel like I have to,” I shrug with sadness.

“You call me if shit goes crazy, okay?” I nod, and we both turn to go back to the guys.

As soon as we get close enough to them, Zach gives us both a condescending smirk.
