“That ring on your finger says otherwise,” I smirk at her, knowing it will get her riled up even more.

As if on cue, she lifts her left hand up and stares at the diamond ring I slipped on her last night during our short wedding ceremony. I promised myself then that I would give her a big wedding when we got home. Not gonna happen. A big divorce, yes.

“Take your fucking ring, Zach,” she struggles to pull it off her hand, then throws it at me, hitting me in the chest with it. “I don’t need anything from you. Get away from me,” she screams.

I bend down to pick up the expensive piece of jewelry that she so carelessly threw on the floor. I take two menacing steps toward her. She jumps when I grab her left hand and push the ring back on her ring finger. I almost want to kiss it when I see her wincing in pain, but this is only the beginning. I will make her hurt more than this, I’m sure.

“Think about leaving me again, Hunter, and there will be hell to pay,” I keep her hand in between us, not allowing her to move. “Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice though,” I push on the ring hard enough where I know I am hurting her more, “and be prepared to pay the consequences.”

The spark seems to be back in her eyes, and I am not talking about just this morning, but since we reconnected. It makes her look more like the girl I fell in love with so long ago.

“You’re talking like I hurt you on purpose, Zach,” she spits her words at me. “Like I didn’t hurt over it, too. Alone,” she is sobbing now.

“Why didn’t you tell me when we ran into each other at the hospital?” I have no doubt in my mind that I would’ve taken her back on that day, no matter what she’d done. I was so head over heels still in love with her.

“I wanted to,” she sniffles. “I was so scared, and in pain…”

“And you didn’t think the father of your baby knowing what you did was important enough?”

“What I did…” She seems to be shocked by my words.

“We’re going to go to your room, and you’re going to pack. We’re leaving.”

“I can’t leave without Chloe,” she cries out like that’s her lifeline. “I need Chloe to come home with me.”

“You are out of your fucking mind if you think I am going to let you out of my sight until we get this marriage annulled.” She must really think I’m a fool. My heart does constrict in my chest when I see the pain in her eyes. I don’t want to feel anything for her anymore. I hate myself for noticing how she feels.

I let go of her, then march us both out of the room. I am already packed. I had time to do that while she was sleeping, and I’ll have someone bring the bag downstairs while I wait for her to get her shit.

I am shocked with the small bag she has with her when we get to her room.

“That all you have?” I eye the place again. Looks like she and Chloe got put in a big suite, and I have to say that I am impressed.

“Can I change real quick?” Her voice is shaking with nerves.

“Go ahead,” I nod toward the door to her bedroom, and she runs there.

Impressively fast, she comes back out looking more presentable. Her black slacks have been replaced with dark wash jeans, and her fancy off the shoulder top from last night with a simple white t-shirt. Her hair is up in a ponytail, and she’s got not a stitch of makeup on.

She’s never looked more beautiful.

“Now what?” she looks much shorter in her flat shoes than last night when she was wearing the high heels.

I open the door to the suite and wait for her to walk out in front of me.

“Honeymoon is over.”

CHAPTER 24

Talk

Hunter

I am legit scared to death right now. I don’t understand what’s going on. Why does Zach think I killed our baby? How could I have known what was going to happen to the baby? I didn’t even know I was pregnant until it was done.

We get to the lobby of the hotel, and right away, I see Chloe. Without a word to Zach, I change course and walk toward her. I need Chloe to save me from this nightmare.

I jump in surprise when I feel Zach’s hand cupping the back of my head. “Don’t think you can get away from this, Slayer,” he whispers into my ear, making my nickname sound like an insult.
