After kicking my shoes off in the mudroom, I walk in and see Danny, Chloe, and Aggie sitting with Marks.

Game face on.

“No baseball tonight?”

“Don’t be mad.” Chloe smiles as she walks toward me.

“Never at you.” Knowing I’m laying it on too thick, I add, “Annoyed at times, sure.”

“I was supposed to have an appointment with my special doctor on Monday.”

“Really?” I fake shock.

“They had a cancellation and want me to come in tomorrow morning. Danny was able to change our flights to tonight.”

Danny walks over and drapes his hand around her shoulder. “We were just talking. How about you come, too?”

I know what he’s doing; he’s trying to get me out of here. Not happening.

“I have to work, but?—”

“Come tomorrow after work. Just for the weekend?” Chloe asks.

“Maybe next weekend?” I offer instead.

She smirks. “Does this have anything to do with?—”

“No!” I cut her off.

She hugs me. “I call bull-poop.”

Aggie giggles. “Poop.”

Chloe turns to her. “Listen, Little Miss Sassy Pants.”

She laughs, and I move to her and scoop her up. “Love you, Aggie.

“I know!” She laughs.

Marks pulls out of the airport drop-off and looks over at me. “Wanna hit a ball game?”

“I’d actually like to go see Cora.”

“I get that, but this is gonna be a lot for her and you.”

“Of course it is,” I snap, and then I realize it’s not his fault. “I’m sorry. It’s just as you said—a lot.”

“Going home, you’ll be all in your head, and it’ll drive you insane.”

“Isn’t there something you and I could do to find him? A game seems like a waste of time.”

He glances at me then back at the road and grumbles, “You’re more of a pain in the ass than your sister.”

“Tell me, did he come here before or after Chloe did?”

He frowns. “After.”
