Fawna snorts, which obviously shocks them both, and they begin laughing.

“I bet Mom calls you Daddy.”

He shakes his head. “No. You’re my little girl, so, no, we don’t talk like that, because you don’t think like that. You’re still hoping to be the Tooth Fairy when you grow up.”

She smiles at him. “Mmhmm.”

Sliding the five across the bar, he pours two more then hands one to Fawna and lifts one himself. “To victories earned and games won. To keeping it in check. The season’s just begun.”

We tap glasses and shoot them back.

I reach into my pocket and pull out some cash.

Fawna’s father holds up his hand. “This one’s on me.”

“Thanks, um—shit, I don’t know what to call you.”

“Not Daddy,” Hudson deadpans.

“Yeah, not that. My name’s Abe.”

And then, all hell breaks loose.

In the back, I see Leland Locke and a guy who’s wearing a maroon Montana Mavericks hat go crashing into a table, knocking it over, drinks and fists flying.

Without thinking, I turn my hat and call back to Hudson, “Stay with Mom and Jillian.” Then I push through the crowd, scanning the area for one person and one person only.

When I see her bent over, I throw bodies out of my way to get to her because she’s in the middle of the whole fucking thing.

I grab both her and her sister, tuck them in, and push out through the crowd.

“You okay, Red?”

She pushes away, puts her little fists on her hips, and looks up at me. “What the hell was that all about?”

Confused, I shake my head and look at her sister, who’s sucking her lips in and saying nothing.

Hudson throws his arm around Cecilia. “Don’t be pissed, CeCe. State Farm was nowhere to be found, so Rome had to be the good neighbor.”

She shakes him off, puts her nose in the air, and walks away.

I glance at Chloe, who rolls her eyes.

“Walk away if your balls aren’t big enough to deal with all that.”

“His balls are big, huge.” Hudson shoves my shoulder. “Go, man.”

I turn and watch as she walks down the little hall toward the restrooms and decide, Fuck it.

Turning the corner, I see her red ponytail. “Cecilia, give me a second, would you?”

She turns and scowls at me.

“You wanna tell me why you’re pissed at me?”

“You outed me in front of my sister. Not cool, baller.”

I nod. “I get that, but then again, that’s not what I was trying to do, not at all.”
