“Baby doll, I’m just playin’,” Chloe assures her.

She nods and looks up at me then to Chloe. “I don’t want Aggie to wonder who I am.”

I look at Chloe, expecting her to tell her she won’t. But she simply scoops ice cream and nods.

“That’s going to be a difficult conversation, whichever direction it goes in, but for Aggie,” she then whispers, “and my dad, I think?—”

“Sisters?” Chloe smiles.

“If that’s okay.”

“I’ll take it.” She smiles at her then looks at me. “There’s power in three, right?”

“Absolutely.”

Cora’s shoulders rise and fall. “One more reason, my mom was the best mom, I wanna honor that always.”

Chloe holds her hand to her heart. “I thank God for her daily.”

As I crush potato chips and dump them out into the bowls of ice cream and push hers across the island, I say, “She gave all three of us a gift. I’m sorry I never got a chance to meet her.”

Cora looks down and asks, “Has anyone heard anything about my dad?”

We all look up when Danny walks into the house.

He looks at us, and then at our bowls of ice cream. “Where’s mine?”

“I’ll get you a bowl while you give Cora an update on her father.” I say.

“Your dad’s on his way back to the States.” He winks at her then holds out his phone. “I’ll trade you a phone for your ice cream.”

“Why do I want your phone?”

“Because your boyfriend is on the line.” He wags his brows.

“I’m mad at him,” I grumble as I snatch it out of his hand.

Danny waves the spoon between me and Chloe. “You two show that emotion in completely different ways. She ices me out, and you offer your house to him and his friends.”

“Oh, whatever,” I say as I walk out of the room.

Phone to my ear, I sigh.

“You gotta do me a favor,” Rome says softly.

“Favor? I left town, left Elle—even though she would have loved flying—and left you with pretend me to deal with all of you.”

“You gave me your house and your heart, too, yeah?” I can hear the smile in his voice.

The fact that I adore that he said that is muddied by the fact that I can’t admit that I love it because I’m mad at him.

“Cecilia, you’re breaking my heart,” he sings.

My laugh cuts him off. “Oh my God, knock it off and give me some intel.”

“Just gave Danny the rundown. I’d rather talk to you. Butter you up. Make sure you remember you’re not angry with me but the situation before I tell you that the giant holes in the roof—which the firefighters needed to create to control the fire—will be fixed within a week, and then they can fix the inside damage in the attic.”

“So, two weeks?” I ask.
