Outside, he shows me the system and yawns while doing so.

“When’s the last time you got any decent sleep?” I ask.

“When I was eight.”

The way he says it is serious; he’s not joking at all.

“I could take a shift,” I offer.

“We’re set up good here. Wags is good. Pope and Whit even increased their system. I’ll sleep for a few hours. He’s not coming here. He knew better last night, which is why he fucked with your place.”

“You get confirmation yet?”

He shakes his head. “I don’t need it.”

“Yeah, I didn’t think so.”

Cora answered a million questions Chloe asked about her life and her family, and all the things one would want to know about someone they loved. She did this to the point of exhaustion. Just a few minutes before, she passed out on the sectional.

Chloe stands up, presses her finger to her lips, and holds her hand out for me.

We walk quietly from the living room and into the kitchen.

“Ice cream?” she asks, opening the freezer.

“Got chocolate?”

She smiles as she holds it up.

“Potato chips?”

She grins. “You know I do.”

I grab bowls from the cupboard and spoons from the drawer, setting them on the island beside her.

She holds up the ice cream scooper. “I scoop, and you dish about Roman Hart.”

I shake my head. “Nope, this is a Chloe day.”

“From what I hear, you and Roman Hart got so hot and heavy that you caught the place on fire,” she deadpans, and then we both laugh.

Hugging me tight, she sniffs. “You ever hide something like him being in town again, I swear to you, I’ll move my whole family in.”

“I’m sorry, Chloe, but he doesn’t get to fuck up Aggie’s chance to be a big sister.”

“You two mind if I come join?” Cora asks from the doorway.

“Of course not.” Chloe nods to the cupboard. “Get Cora a bowl and a spoon. We need to introduce her to the Shaw sisters’ favorite dessert.”

“So, I was thinking …” Cora knots her hands as she walks over and slides onto a stool.

“Oh, we don’t allow that after seven p.m. here in Walton.” Chloe winks.

Cora rests her elbows on the countertop, pulling the cuffs of her sleeves up around her hands, and hangs her head.
