“I shouldn’t have said that.” She blinks back tears.

“I need you to know that, from the minute I found out you were growing in my belly, you were mine. And when I realized he’d never see you, touch you, get to hear those tiny little sounds you made, I knew you were never his, just mine.” She puts her hand on her belly. “I loved being pregnant because I knew I could keep you with me. After I had you, I was able to hold you for two whole days. I got to whisper all my dreams for you and tell you all the things I wanted you to know about my mama and CeCe. I got to feed and change you, smell you, kiss your sweet little cheeks, and feel your hand wrap around my finger. When I handed you to your mama, she hugged me so tight, thanked me and promised me she’d love you with every breath. I knew right then that she loved you just as much and she’d never let anything happen to you.”

“You never considered abor?—”

“I was five months before I knew; adoption was the only option. I honestly have no idea what I would have done had I been given options, but I’m so glad I didn’t have to make that choice at an age where you really don’t understand what’s going on. All that is history. What I wanna know is when I can hold—” She laughs. “Well, hug you.”

“I do have plans this weekend and next, and the week is busy with school.” Cora looks at me, and I smile to encourage her to continue. “Spring break?”

Danny laughs. “You could come to Walton. I can guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they spent spring break in Walton, Texas. They’ll be seriously envious.”

“Or we can go somewhere fun?” Chloe says.

“I’d love to come to Texas.”

“Well, you’re in for one hell of a treat.” Marks chuckles.

“You let us know the date, and we’ll get you a ticket.” Danny winks.

“She’s going to fly alone?” Chloe asks him.

“I’m gonna guess she’s done that; she probably drives a car and wipes her own A-S-S.” Danny chuckles.

“I wipe my own A-S-S, Daddy,” comes from behind them.

“And that’s Aggie.” I laugh.

“I can’t wait to meet her.”

“You have other siblings?” Chloe asks her.

She shakes her head. “Only child.”

Danny tosses his head back in a loud-from-the-soul kind of laugh. “Not anymore.”

Watching Cora’s smile grow and her eyes shine is one of the most beautiful moments I’ve seen in my entire life.

They talk for a long time, and I only know this because Marks grabs the remote and turns on the TV. “Jags are playing.”

“Ooo, CeCe, your puppy daddy is about to be on TV.” Cora grins.

“Oh my God, right? Isn’t he perfect for her?” Chloe squeals.

On The Road Again

Wednesday/Thursday

In Toronto, we took two of three games against the Jays, and in Chicago, exactly the same.

We played our asses off, and now my ass is in first class. I’ll be landing in Trenton by four and making damn sure I’m up when Red flies out the door, no doubt hopping on one foot as she puts her shoes on in an attempt to get to work on time.

Fuck, I’ve missed her. Pretty sure it was even more with the nonstop messaging back and forth and an almost phone call. It was almost because I wanted to hear her damn voice so badly but then thought better of it since she was no doubt—and I mean, none—feeling it, too.

She took Elle to work with her every day and sent messages and pictures of her lying on her pretty pink sheets, head on her pillow and quilt tucked up tight.
