I hold out a fist. He doesn’t even see it.

I glance at Amias, who simply closes his eyes and shakes his head ever so slightly.

Jase takes over. “Since each of you were hand-picked by us and given the thumbs-up by the rest of the organization, we made the decision to bring you all in to give you the news without the rest of the team. You get why?”

When no one says anything, I ask, “To prepare us for the shit we’re about to take?”

Jase chuckles. “That, and so you could celebrate your win. You men deserve this.” He turns and looks at Blaze. “Kid, you good?”

He meets his eyes, stays quiet for a second, then says, “I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

“Your father has nothing to do with you being brought on.”

He huffs. “I do not doubt that.”

Zandor stands up. “All right, Jags, bring it in.”

By bring it in, he legit means a group hug, which is fucking odd, but such is life.

“Nour and I are going out tonight. You in?” AJ asks.

“Nah, I think I’m gonna call it a day.”

“You know the ass offered up in the minors was always there. Can you imagine how many women are going to want a go now that we’re in the majors?” He holds his arms out wide. “We’re gonna have to hand out numbers, man.”

Nour chuckles. “Ticketed ass.”

They fist-bump over that. Me? I’ve never liked the ones who’d stand in line waiting for a chance, aka “ticketed.”

I close my locker and sling my bag over my shoulder. “You two ever hear the phrase, ‘Don’t shit where you eat?’”

They both look at me blankly, which gives me my answer.

“The minors weren’t home; we could have gotten dropped or pulled up at any time. This is home for at least three years. I’m not shitting up my home.”

“Should have rented and not bought, man.” AJ shakes his head.

Walking out of the bathroom stall, I drag the back of my hand across my mouth and see Chuck fucking Turner smirk in the mirror. “You good, kid?”

“I’m good.” I step up to the sink and turn on the water.

He turns and leans against the sink, arms crossed, looking at me. “Wasn’t too keen on a kid who chose”—he shakes his head—“fucking chose—football over baseball coming in here and taking my place.”

I splash water on my face then grab some paper towels. “I had my reasons.”

“Kid brother.” He nods.

“Yeah.”

“You throw up?” he asks as we start walking out of the bathroom.

I can’t help but laugh. “Sure did.”
