Raúl shakes his head, then leans forward and kisses his way down my neck. A strange energy fills me as I gasp. “Penny. When will you learn? You can do whatever you want. Only a few vampires would not want a human queen, but there will always be critics. Even if you were the most perfect vampire queen. The real question is, what do you want, Penny?”

I wrap my arms around his neck, and as I do, I notice a thin black band on my wrist. Ignoring it for now, I pull his body closer to mine. “Right now? You.”

His hand crawls up my dress, and he growls. “Happy to oblige.”

Chapter Seventy

I moan as Raúl’s thumb strokes my center, my hands gripping his arms. My body heats as I move against him, unable to stop myself. In seconds, my dress is off, exposing my skin to the cool touch of the stone floor beneath me.

“What do you want, Penny?”

I open my eyes, blinking. The flickering candlelight casts dancing shadows on the stone walls of the tomb. It creates a play of light and darkness, illuminating the statues and inscriptions. “You. Always you.”

His lips descend onto mine, kissing me with urgency. My mouth opens, and his tongue slips in, stroking mine.

As my hands explore his chest, I feel the sculpted contours of his abdomen under his shirt, tracing the ridges of his muscles beneath my fingertips. He draws away for a second, and flings his shirt into the corner of the room, before his lips are back on mine.

My fingers descend under his waistband, running along his skin under it, and he moans. He slides his mouth to my neck, gently biting. His mouth continues down my body, kissing every inch of me, stopping at my center.

Before I know what is happening, his mouth is between my legs, his tongue teasing. I jerk my hips as I cry out. My mind is gone now, completely focused on the feeling Raúl provides, unable to form a thought.

His mouth leaves me, and I protest, my head moving back and forth. “Do you want this, Penny?”

“Yes, yes, please,” I say, desperately.

Slowly, he leans forward, twirling his tongue at my center. Moan after moan, gasp after gasp, comes out of my mouth as tension builds in my body, the symphony bouncing off the tomb walls. I grab his hair, knowing I am close. He does not stop and my hips buck, the tension releasing in sweet, delicious waves of pleasure.

My arms fall to the ground, and in a flash, he hovers over me, his body pressing into me. “Do you want this, Penny?” he asks as he enters me. His body presses against mine, as if our very souls are merging.

“Yes,” I say, my head moving back and forth as he pushes into me. I grasp his shoulders, turning my mouth to his neck and biting down. He groans, one hand reaching up to cover my breast.

He moves faster, harder than ever before, and I cry out with delight as our bodies move together. Raúl stares into my eyes, unblinking. “I love you, Penny,” he says.

In between my cries, my heart skips a beat. I stare back, unwavering and answer. “I love you, too.”

He gasps, then collapses on top of me. I enjoy the weight of him for the few seconds before he rolls over, pulling me with him. I rest my head on his chest and start drawing circles on his skin. “I love you,” I say again, my words echoing against the walls of stone. A warmth spreads through me at being able to say it freely.

He looks at me with an expression of such tenderness that my heart squeezes. “I love you, too.”

The flickering candlelight continues to cast its gentle glow, creating dancing shadows along the wall. Raúl strokes my back, the familiar, soothing movements relaxing my body, reminding me I am safe. As I close my eyes, surrounded by his comforting embrace, I am enveloped in a cocoon of tranquility and contentment.

We watch out of the door until the sky is dark enough for Raúl to travel. While we wait, we begin to clean the tomb, making sure there is no trace of our ritual. I scrub the chalk away, eyeing my left wrist. The band around it is a simple line, with no designs or symbols on it at all. When I touch it, it doesn’t hurt at all. Raúl walks through, gathering the herbs and candles, and I notice he has a band on his left wrist, too. I grab his wrist and examine it. His mark is slightly thicker, but plain like mine. I hold his up, showing him.

“Have you seen this?” I ask.

Raúl stares at his wrist in surprise. “No. Where did this come from?”

The ritual marked you, says Nava.

“Interesting,” says Raúl as he examines my mark, turning my arm back and forth.

I shrug. “I like it. It will remind me we’re always connected.”

Raúl kisses the inside of my wrist before returning to cleaning. “Me, too.”

When we finish, we sit by the door, watching the world and waiting for dusk. Raúl wraps an arm around my shoulder, pulling me close. “You still haven’t answered. What do you think of becoming Queen Penny?”

My heart squeezes and I shake my head. “I don’t know, Raúl. I barely am able to handle myself. How can I rule a legion of vampires? Not to mention again how human I am.”
