“Do you want me to talk to them? Especially your mom?” He asks, and I shake my head.

“It’ll be okay, don’t worry.” As the words come out of my mouth, I feel their truth. But to my surprise, as we near the house, I see Stacy and my mom sitting on the porch swing, talking and laughing. They haven’t seen us yet, and I feel my heart start to race.

Liam squeezes my hand a bit tighter, and I know that he’s feeling as nervous as I am. “Don’t worry, they won’t bite,” I say for myself as much as him.

Liam sucks in a deep breath as we near the house and slowly blows it out. My mom looks up and sees us. Her gaze narrows on our joined hands, but Liam and I continue to hold on to each other.

Stacy notices my mom’s attention has shifted and turns to see what she’s looking at. When she sees us, her eyes widen also, and she glances at Mom before turning back to us.

“Good evening, Mrs. Miller, Stacy,” Liam greets my mom and sister with a nod of his head and a crooked smile.

“Hello, Liam.” My mom returns his smile and slides a lifted brow in my direction. I lower my head.

“Is this your dog?” Stacy slides off the swing and coos at Tex, who is already wagging his tail. “He’s so cute. Can I pet him?”

“I’m sure he would love that.” Liam nods, and Stacy crouches before Tex and scratches his head and underbelly.

“Oh, he’s such a good doggie,” she cries. “What breed is he?”

“He’s a German Shepherd,” Liam answers with a smile.

“I want one,” Stacy sighs; she continues to pet Tex, who is loving every minute of it.

“Stacy, you say that to every dog you meet,” Mom counters, and we all laugh. When the laughter stops, there is an awkward silence. Liam tugs at my hand, and I look up at him. He arches his brows, silently asking, “Should I tell them?”

I shake my head slightly and smile, assuring him it will be alright, and I'll tell them myself.

“Liam,” my mother calls. “How are you?”

“I’m doing much better, thank you for asking.” Liam clears his throat. “Uhm, I have to go now. Enjoy the rest of your evening.”

“Alright, Liam. Do take care.” My mother’s smile is a bit forced as she is trying to understand what exactly is going on between us.

Stacy gives Tex one last kiss as she stands up and returns to the swing.

“Have a good night, Liam. See you later.”

I go to drop Liam’s hand, but to my shock, he pulls me closer and kisses my forehead. “I love you,” he whispers.

A blush creeps up my cheeks as the gazes of my mom and sister heat my back relentlessly.

“I love you, too.”

He smiles at me in a way that makes my limbs weak before leading Tex down the road. I stay with my back turned from my mother and sister until Liam disappears from view. When I turn, Stacy’s mouth is open, and her eyes are wide. My mom's expression is blank, and I feel my stomach drop.

“What?” I fold my arms across my chest.

“Didn’t you leave to talk to Andrew earlier?” My mother asks. “And yet here you are holding hands with Liam?” Her brows arch up to her hairline.

I take a deep breath and hold their gazes. “Yes. Liam and I are officially together.”

Both of their eyes are wide, and their mouths have dropped to the floor.

“I thought you were going to see Andrew—” my mom purses her lips.

“I did see Andrew. And we talked.”

“What did you talk about?” Mom asks carefully.
