“Darling, how was your evening?”

“It was good,” I hedge, not wanting to tell her why I needed her to babysit my son at such short notice. “Is Coop asleep?”

“Out like a light.”

This warms my heart. “I’ll pick him up around ten tomorrow.”

“Okay, son. I’ll see you then.”

Just as I’m hanging up, something catches my eye, and when I look up, I see Nia backing away from the building. There is fear etched on every line of her body.

What the hell?

I get out of the car and eat up the space between us in a handful of strides.

“Nia?”

Her eyes slide from the building to me and I watch her throat work before she manages to get her words out. “My apartment…”

“What about it?”

“Someone broke in.”
