I felt the heat from those words move across my face. “I promise, I’m not that interesting.”

“Now, that’s where you’re wrong.” His stare dipped down my body. “Can I be honest with you?”

“Of course.”

“No, Lily, can I be really honest with you?” He paused. “Because once I say this, you can’t unhear it. So, decide now if that’s something you want hitting your ears or not.”

“You’re sure it’s not just the scotch talking? If I had as many drinks as I’ve poured for you, I’d probably end up proposing to that golden retriever who sat on my lap.”

He laughed. “I can hold my liquor.”

“Okay, I’m intrigued. Tell me all the things, Mr. Spade.”

“Brady.”

“Let’s stick with Mr. Spade.” I winked.

“You’re sure?”

“I appreciate the warnings, but now, they’re only just adding to the buildup, and I’m one of those people who reads the ending before the beginning because I can’t handle surprises.”

“You’re ruthless.”

I shrugged. “I like to be prepared.”

“Even for this?”

“Maybe.” I smirked. “Whatcha got for me?”

“I’m going to give you a fact.”

“Please tell me this isn’t going to make me math? That’s a subject I cannot handle.”

He chuckled. “I’ve seen no less than twenty thousand women in my life—passing them on the street, eating across from them, working with them, flying with them.”

“Okay …”

“And not one has ever been as gorgeous as you.”

He was silent for a moment, but what was happening inside me was so loud that it was piercing my eardrums.

“Ah, there it is, Lily. My favorite smile.”

“Hey, Lily,” I heard as I was just about to pass Mr. Spade’s row, holding the bowl of ice cream 6A had just finished.

I turned toward his pod. “Another scotch?”

“I’m good in that department.” He nodded toward my hands. “What do you have there?”

I glanced down at the soupy leftovers. “Strawberry ice cream with walnuts.”

“Yours?”

I laughed. “No.”

“What’s funny about that?”

“Obviously, you don’t know this about me, but I don’t like nuts on anything. Salad, dessert, sweet potato casserole—no to all of that.”
