“Go on over to the housing office for your room assignment,” she said, looking down her nose at me. “Don’t know what they will have this late in the semester, but I suppose they have to put you somewhere.”

I imagined a cot in the back of a classroom but quickly shook my head at the idea.

My donation should get me a room to stay in at the very least.

“Where is it?” I asked, feeling more out of place than ever. “The housing office?”

She rolled her eyes and made no attempt to hide it. “Two doors down. You can’t miss it. It’s the office marked Housing right above the door.”

I snorted and turned on my heels. My stuff was still in my car, but I would get everything I needed first before dragging my luggage inside.

Reading Glasses was right. Two doors down was an office, and I walked right in, schedule and ID in hand since they’d asked for it twice when releasing my class schedule.

I looked around the sparse place, different from the managed chaos of the other office, and almost got my hopes up thinking that someone would offer to help me. Or Minx would come in the door and ask me questions before dismissing everything I’d come to learn.

I knew it had to be hard to hear, but denying it only made things harder.

“Can I help you?” a younger woman asked. Her vest and wide-leg pants made her look sharp and simple. Even her hair hung below her shoulders in a flat cut that accentuated the sharpness of her cheekbones.

“Yes. I enrolled a few days ago but only arrived today. My name is Ava Volk. I was sent here to get my room assignment.”

This seemed to shock her. She dropped the papers she was holding on the desk and stood to take my ID from me. “I see. You do realize this is extremely late in the semester. I’m not even sure if we have an availability for a female. I…” She sighed and sat back down. “One way to find out. Let’s search, shall we?”

There was no we. She would be telling me if I was staying in a room or a bench in the library, but I nodded like a goof anyway.

She clicked and moved the mouse. Typed in some things. Moved the mouse some more and then ran her hand down her neck as though searching for a room was choking the life out of her. “I have one room but you may not be pleased with it. It’s not a normal room assignment. In fact, it’s quite…out of the ordinary and I have to get permission from the headmistress before we go any further. Just one moment.”

She got up and went through a door and started speaking before it was closed. She apologized to the headmistress about the interruption.

I leaned back in the chair, closing my eyes, and took a moment to rethink my latest life choices.

Come all the way across the country, after my parents died, to find a sister who didn’t believe I was actually her sister.

I had to admit, there was something else that drove me here. A desire to find a sibling, sure, but another factor pulled me to this place. My wolf kept her senses sharp. She was right beneath the surface, testing the air, taking everything in. Almost as if she expected danger around the corner.

She was on high alert and had been since I turned off the engine on my Jeep in the parking lot underneath the building.

“Okay. I’ve gotten approval from the headmistress.” Ann, her nameplate on the desk read, said as she sat back down. “We need to get you keys and a map, and you already have your schedule.”

“Wait, I’m sorry. Why were you so hesitant in giving me this room? Are there monsters in it? A ghost?”

Ann leaned forward and her curtain bangs, I noticed, fell completely straight along her brow.

“Worse. It’s a suite occupied by three college-aged men.”

I cracked up, and she did as well. “Three guys? I’m sure they are all too busy and studying and playing football and being playboys to pay me any mind. They might not even realize I’m there.”

Ann sighed. “A girl can hope.”

Clearly, Ann had some opinions on men.

“Here we are. Keys. Map. Room designation. Wi-Fi password. The rest is in your packet. You did get a packet, right?”

I nodded. “Yes.”

“Good. You need me to call someone to help you get your things from your vehicle?”

I shook my head. “That’s kind of you, but I’m fine. Don’t have much anyway. Thank you for your help.”
