Okay, it’s hot sex. But it isn’t just hot sex.

This is chores and taking care of kids. This is life.

Finn hands me a coffee how I like it, with too much cream and sugar, and kisses my head as he passes to deliver a plate to a sleepy Em. At the table, I watch Reid and Ben go back through his set of flashcards before his vocabulary quiz at school today.

The sight of us all together makes my heart swell with hope. I didn’t know it could be so good.

Chapter 17

Cammie

“I’m sorry I have to go, sweetheart.” Reid kisses my cheek.

The firehouse called when we dropped the kids off at school this morning. They’re bringing him back in. The flu is going around town, leaving them short-staffed.

“You’ve done so much already. Thank you.” I burrow into his side, taking another whiff of his scent. “I’ll start packing today, call the rental agency, and get started on the move-out logistics. I should be all set to move out by the weekend.”

“Good. On Saturday, we’ll wrangle up a crew to move and get it all done at once. Tell Finn if you need anything. I hate that I’m going to miss your talk with the kids. I’ll see if I can video call in.”

I nod against his chest and take another minute before pulling back. I never thought about what Reid’s job meant except in that hot firefighter kind of way. But now that he’s returning to work, his job’s dangerous nature hits me. I get why Finn struggles on nights Reid is away. Sending him out the door is nerve-racking.

He must sense my unease because he murmurs in my ear, “I promise I’ll be as safe as possible and do everything I can to always return to you all.”

“I know,” I say, sounding more confident than I feel.

Finn skids into the front entry and lets out a relieved sigh. “Before you go, I need her to open day two. There is no way I’m patient enough to skip a day.”

It breaks the tension, and I laugh, letting go of Reid to take our omega’s outstretched hand.

“All right, babe. But you better wait to open the third box until after I get home,” Reid teases.

I follow an excited Finn back into the cozy kitchen. The key is where we left it by my courting box, and I locate the second box quickly this time. Inside are five tickets to the annual Knotty Pines Summer Porch Fest this Sunday night.

“It’s a family date,” Reid says, voice a little unsure.

My heart melts at the idea that we can all go out as a family, but then I remember that this weekend is booked. “I thought we were going to move me in this weekend?”

Finn runs his hand through his hair, holding back his curls, and giving me an embarrassed grin. “We are. You’ve never seen my family in action. We’ll get you moved in and put away in one day. And by the time the cavalry leaves, you may never want to attend a family function again.”

My nerves flare at the idea of meeting his four sisters, but it’s nice knowing we’ll have so much help.

“A family date is perfect. It means a lot to me that you would involve the kids,” I say.

Reid and Finn wrap me in a hug-sandwich.

“Get used to the new reality, sweetheart. We’re a pack,” Reid says.

I don’t know when I’ll be used to it, but I like it.

Finn and I walk Reid to the door again and tell him goodbye.

“Let me grab my keys, and we can swing by Mel’s so you can check your schedule. Then we can start packing,” Finn offers. He darts into the kitchen while I grab my purse and check that I have my cell.

“Don’t you have pieces you’re working on?” I call.

“I do, but they’ve got some wiggle room,” he says, rounding the corner from the kitchen. “You don’t need to pack that whole house alone. And don’t you dare say it’s charity. Let me help you.” He points his keys at me.

I hold up my hands. “I wasn’t going to protest. I hate moving.”
