Holding her closer, I murmur in her ear, “Not tonight, sweetheart, but I promise to make it up to you.”

“Stupid flu,” she grouses before her belly heaves with the force of another cough.

I get to business after that, washing the rest of her body then her hair. She’s fading, bracing herself against the shower stall as I finish up and turn off the shower. Finn is waiting for us outside the shower with an open towel.

“Let’s get you bundled up and back in bed, beautiful.”

I dress, gather our dirty clothes, and run them to the laundry room. By the time I return, Finn has her in another one of my T-shirts and sipping a cup of tea in bed while he dries her hair. The twinkle lights on the canopy create a dreamy feel, and with the mural of the night sky behind them, it looks as if they’re sitting on a bed of clouds. They’re beautiful together, like a dream.

“Mom says the humidifier and tea will help,” Finn tells her. “It should let you get some sleep.”

I watch, mesmerized by the softness between them. Her eyes flutter closed, and she has a slight smile. The things we’re giving her aren’t hard, but I don’t think she’s all that used to easy. Finn is so warm and inviting that it’s difficult not to soften around him. It makes me glad fate sent her here.

Cammie’s croaky voice says, “Can I ask a question?”

“Anything,” I tell her, lying along the length of our bed, watching the two of them.

“How did you two meet?”

Finn finishes drying her hair and braids it while he animatedly paints the scene, telling her about living in the city growing up and having to move to this small town when he was a teenager.“You know they say you can feel your mate walk in a room?”

“No. That’s a thing?” Cammie asks, shaking her head.

“It’s an omega myth probably. That did not happen to us. I was oblivious until I smelled him. It was the first day of school, and I was doodling in my journal about the horrors of moving to a town with chickens walking through Main Street. I was determined to hate it here, and absolutely no one could tell me otherwise.”

“Was this before or after the tattoos and piercings?” she asks, a smile on her lips as she looks between us.

“Before. Think black leather pants, black shirt, black nail polish.”

“Don’t forget the beanie,” I tease.

“And the beanie.” He rolls his eyes. “All emo.”

“I can see it.” Cammie smiles. “And in comes…”

“This very tall, very fine-smelling country boy.”

Cammie opens one eye to look me over and smirks.

“This fine man leans over my desk, and I finally get a clue about what is happening. My omega instincts took over. I climbed that desk so fast, and climbed him next. Planted my lips like a flag.” Finn blows me a kiss. “This one, please.”

Cammie bursts into laughter, which turns into another coughing fit.

“All right, enough story time,” I say, sitting up. “You need rest.”

“Gods, I love it when he gets all growly,” Finn says with a shiver, his eyes teasing. He finishes tying off her hair while I get comfortable in the center of the bed.

Cammie crawls over to me and plants a kiss on my cheek. “I wanted to do that too.”

“What?” I ask, surprised that she came to me.She’s guarded with me in a way she doesn’t seem to be with Finn.

She smiles. “Climb you that first day in the diner.”

My heart flutters. I like that she wants me, but I like it more that she’s willing to tease me. I tug her to me, settling her on my chest. “I knew you were my mate the night out on the lawn.”

“At the downtown offices in my case.” Finn joins our cuddle, plastering himself to my side.

Cammie runs her small hand back and forth along my chest, kickstarting my purr. “I felt it too,” she whispers bravely. “I was afraid.”
