“Lie back, baby. Your sister went to get Reid and Ben from the hall.” I fuss with the blankets, trying to help her get comfortable. I’m appalled by the thread count and anxious about the state of this lackluster nest. I know we’re at the hospital, but this is pitiful. I’m staging a breakout if we don’t leave here soon.

“You have a thing for tucking me in, huh?” she asks, her voice slow as syrup.

“I have a thing for you, but I’m currently in desperate need of a good blanket. I swear, as soon as we get to my nest, I’ll make sure you’re comfortable.”

Her brown eyes, always tinged with mistrust, widen into twin saucers. “Your nest?”

The door bangs open, and Ben calls, “Mom.” His voice cracks with new tears.

She opens her arms, and he runs to her, throwing himself into her hug.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. I didn’t mean it,” he cries.

She whispers in his ear, rocking him gently while he sobs in her arms, shaking.

I get the feeling. It’s the same thing I want to do now. I hang back, unsure of what I’m allowed in this strange twist of fate. She’s my mate, but still not. He will be my son, but he isn’t yet. I want to get us home, take care of her and them, and let us all snuggle until the world makes sense again.

But she could turn us away. What the fuck will I do then?

Reid steps in behind Ben, followed by Jeanie.

“Hey, sweetheart. How are you feeling?” he asks.

She blinks at him and looks around. “Where’s Em?”

Reid steps to the bed, and I can see the restraint it takes him not to scoop them both up into a hug. It’s the same feeling I’m fighting now.

“Finn arranged for Emmaline to go home with his sister Payton until we could get her so she didn’t have to come to the hospital. We called your sister, and she brought Ben,” he explains.

She nods, still holding Ben but turning to her sister.

“Hey, babes. How is your head?” Jeanie asks, rounding the bed and leaning into their hug.

“I feel like crap. When can I go home? This is already going to cost a fortune,” Cammie murmurs.

That question guts me, worry spilling out everywhere that the cost is her biggest concern. I make a mental note to make sure she never sees this bill.

Ben releases her and wipes his eyes.

Jeanie sits down on the bed beside her nephew. “About that…”

Reid clears his throat, and all eyes go to my alpha. “I know the doctor is ready to clear you, but the nurse needs signed proof of care.”

Cammie blinks in confusion. “What does that mean?”

Her sister cocks her eyebrow, her voice teasing. “It means you need a keeper for the next few days. And these guys have volunteered to play nursemaid.”

Cammie swallows a smile. “Don’t make me laugh.”

“It’s true,” I cut in.

Reid adds, “We want you and the kids to come home with us. Let us care for you for the next few days until you feel better.” His voice is the soft one he uses during my pre-heat or when I need a cuddle after a long day. I can see its effect on Cammie, easing some of my worry.

She needs his care, his safety. And my sweet alpha is going to love doting on her. The best place for her is at home with us, where we can ensure she gets what she needs.

Jeanie crosses her arms and cuts her eyes at both of us. “But you don’t gotta do shit you don’t wanna, and you know you’ve got a spot on my couch.”

Cammie looks between all of us, her face tired. She’s barely holding herself up, let alone Ben.
