"What do you know about it? You and that omega don't care about my mom. No one does but us. We look out for each other." He wipes stubbornly at his eyes, his voice thick with tears.

"I know enough to know that you all are worth fighting for." I purr, trying to wrap him up in the small comfort he'll let me give.

After a few minutes, he whispers, "I yelled at her this morning. Called her names."

"What happened?”

"I was mad and thought she was being stupid. I said what people say about us is true.”

“And what do people say?” I ask, even though I think hearing his answer will hurt.

Ben looks away from me. His words are so low that I have to lean in to hear him. “That we’re trash.”

“Is that what you believe?” I ask.

He’s quiet for so long I think he’s ignoring me, but then he whispers, “No.”

My heart breaks for Cammie. She’s trying so hard to keep it together, and having her son fighting with her can’t be making any of that easier. And that label is a lot for a young boy to deal with.

“You know people say ignorant things, but your mom is trying her best to take care of you. I’m glad she’s letting Finn and me help her. Did you apologize?”

“No.” He shakes his head, the word small. He stares at the wall, refusing to look at me, his voice accusing. “I don't understand. Why are you here? My dad doesn't even care what happens to us, and he's supposed to. You're basically strangers."

I don't know what her asshole ex said or did, but whatever his stupidity, it's brought them here to me. It was his loss, and it feels wrong to be grateful for it, even if I am. "I'm sorry it's been that way. You all deserve someone to look out for you too. I know none of this has been usual for courting, but Finn and I aren’t going anywhere unless your mom asks us to. She's our mate, and we take that very seriously."

He whips his head around, gawking at me and wiping his eyes. "Your mate? She's a beta." He says it as if it's a dirty secret.

I nod. "She is. When she's feeling better, we want to court her properly, bond with her, and help her take care of you."

"But I still don't understand?—"

"Nothing much to it. She's ours, which means you are ours too."

"You want us too?" His voice cracks, his eyes so fucking sad that I want to kill her ex for all the hurt he's caused.

"I do."

Jeanie's voice calls from the stairwell above us. "She's back. Come on. The doctor's discharging her."

I stand and hold my hand out for Ben. "I promise you, Ben, that I'm gonna do my best to always do right by the three of you. Hold me to it."

He shakes his head, ignoring my offer to help him up. "Whatever." Ben bounds up the stairs, racing back to her.

I pass Jeanie in the hall, and she grabs my arm. "I don't know what she's told you about that ex of hers but be careful. He ain't no picnic."

"Thanks for the heads-up and for trusting us with your sister." I bow my head.

"Who said I trust you?" She looks me over again then laughs. "I've got to say this is an improvement though. No matter how it turns out, you sure are nice to look at."

I blush, and she cackles.

Chapter 10

Finton

Cammie shivers as the nurse and aide get her bed back in the room. She’s awake at least, and the IV is gone from her arm.

“Where are the kids?” she asks, trying to sit up.
