“Recently, huh?” I smile, knocking his shoulder.

“Yeah,” he teases, voice light. “But she’s a little skittish. Trying to see if I can convince her that not everyone will break her heart.”

“Good luck with that,” I say sarcastically. “You’re gonna need it.”

Finn grins. “Something tells me luck is on my side if I’m patient.”

“Well, send some my way,” I tease.

“Which one? Luck or patience?”

“A double scoop of both.”

Finn goes quiet and I wish I knew what he was thinking. If only I had a Magic Eight ball that could tell me whether this man is full of shit or if that pounding desire to trust him is right.

“All you know about me is that I’m a mess. How is that a good fit?” I ask, wrapping my arms around myself. I’m afraid of the truth. I’m worried I won’t recognize a lie. Both ideas make it feel as if my chest is a black hole sucking me in.

“Because I’m an omega, and I know when someone is my match. You’re my match. Mine and Reid’s. And once you trust that we’re not here to break your heart, we can finally get to the business of falling in love.”

I whistle. “That’s some big talk.”

“It’s true.”

“I’m a beta.”

“A very beautiful one. I’ve noticed.” He leans in, pushing a fallen strand of hair behind my ear. “I don’t know what happened with your ex, but the fact that you’re a beta isn’t important to us.”

I look away from him, unconvinced. “I can’t do that to my kids, Finn. No matter how appealing it is. I don’t want them to be heartbroken when another man walks away.”

“That’s fair. But we won’t be walking away.” He stands and holds out his hand. I eye it warily. “Now come on. Let me tuck you in. It’s late, and I bet you work early tomorrow.”

“Tuck me in?” I ask skeptically. “What part of my no said let’s go to bed together?”

He shakes his head, his pretty lips curved up into a smile. “Baby, when wego to bedtogether, I promise it will be with an eager yes. But right now, I’m only asking that you let me take care of you for a minute.”

I think of what his sister said earlier and wonder if maybe it would be okay for someone to take care of me for once. My skin is oversensitive, and my mind is racing, but I let him pull me. Waffles stretches and yawns, following us as Finn leads me into the house.

He walks me to my bedroom then to my en suite. “Sit.” I cock my brow, and he rolls his eyes. “Trust me.”

“That’s a big ask.”

His face softens. “I know, baby. But I promise this won’t hurt.”

That endearment slipped out of his mouth again. It surprises me into compliance, and I plop down on the closed toilet. No one has ever called me that, and the effortless way Finn uses it makes my chest warm.

Finn busies himself poking under cabinets and behind the shower curtain. In the small space, his scent is overwhelming. It creates a cloud of relaxation, making my eyelids feel heavy.

Finn runs a washcloth under the water, adding some of my facewash from the shower. I let my eyes fall closed, my stomach dancing with butterflies. He washes my face gently with the cloth. The soothing circles are so relaxing that the world fades. He adds lotion, massaging it into my skin. Next, he does my hands, kneading my tired fingers until I feel like jelly. When he undoes my braid, scratching my scalp, a moan escapes. He brushes my hair in long swipes, and this sweet sound fills the room.

My eyes pop open. I’ve never heard an omega purr before. Not in real life. It’s supposed to be sacred, something they share only with their mates. He gives another pass through my hair then hands me my toothbrush.

“You finish up,” he says softly, his sweet-sounding purr still motoring.

I brush my teeth in a daze and let him lead me into my room. Waffles has made himself at home at the end of my bed, and I shake my head. “You’re both shameless.”

“Facts,” he says with a laugh. “But we’re too cute not to get our way.”

“Facts,” I parrot.
