"I like junk food for car rides, okay? It's a rule. You walk into a gas station and spend one hundred dollars like a kid given free rein in a candy store, which Dad basically did."

He laughed again before turning the ignition on. When they pulled out of the gas station and returned to the road, Remy felt the hairs on her neck stand up. Looking around, Remy knew no one was following them like before. There were no Lycans running around their car or even off in the distance. With the level ground, there was nowhere for anyone to hide from a sneak attack. She wasn't sure where this feeling was coming from, so she ignored it.

Lykos also looked around through each window like she was and gave her a look. His face mirrored the same feeling she had. Something was going on, but they couldn't see it. They both rolled down the window and began to sniff the air. It was a mixture of dust, dirt, and the aroma of flowers. If a scent did not belong, neither could say what it was. With this being her first time here, she wasn't aware of what scent would be out of place either. Lykos seemed satisfied that nothing was out of place and rolled the window back up.

"What is wrong with you two?"

"Something's off. I feel like we are being watched, but I can't see you who could be watching us."

"There is nothing around. Look out there; there isn't any place for anyone to hide, either. Maybe you are just still on edge after the fight with the Redwoods?"

Bryan's suggestion was plausible. After they left there, their senses seemed to be off. Lycans could feel when things were off. The Lycans inside of them had a weird sense for these things, which came in handy more often than not.

And hers wouldn't let things go.

Remy continued to look around from every angle to find whatever was stalking them. Some things were absolute. The hairs on the back of her neck were sticking up while her mind raced with the possibilities of why her Lycan was on edge. A heavy pit dropped in her stomach, making her feel more nauseous than usual while riding in cars. Her eyes darted around, trying to find what was causing this, but she couldn't see a damn thing other than sand, flowers, and cactuses. She could hear her heart ramming against her chest. Her heightened senses could pick up on her father's doing the same. He felt it, too. That at least eased the tension in her stomach a little. If her father sensed it, too, she was at least not crazy.

What if Myles sent some of his pack after us? The lingering bond is trying to send me some signal to give me a heads-up. That must be it. Even though the bond is severed, the Lycan inside of him still doesn't want its mate to die, so it sends me a warning that something is coming. That has to be it, right?

Her ears caught the sound of an engine speeding down the highway. Remy turned her body and noticed a black van rushing down the road and weaving in and out of cars as it closed the distance toward their vehicle. Bryan must have noticed, too, because she heard the pedal connect to the floor and their car's engine do a mechanical growl as it flew forward.

"Shit! We need to get out of here!" Bryan yelled as he jerked the wheel sideways to start weaving through the small amount of traffic.

Feeling the car move left and right did no favors for Remy's queasy stomach. She did her best to keep her eyes on the black van following them. As far as she was aware, rogues didn't have cars. They were nomads that traveled in their Lycan forms to survive the treacherous terrains between pack territories. Many packs put up traps to capture the rogues and bring them to the council for questioning and judgment. If these weren’t rogues, this would be a hit out on them from a pack.

Fuck. The Old Ways need to be eradicated from our history after this.

"Fuck. There are more coming." Remy noticed Bryan leaning down to peer up at the cliffs they were approaching once more.

A look up from her side of the car gave her just enough of a visual to show a few Lycans jumping from the cliff and hurtling toward their car. There wasn't much they could do to avoid them. If they landed on the ground, they could still jump onto their vehicle as they passed. If they chose to pull over and confront them, they would be on a highway and be subjected to the traffic coming their way including the black van with an unknown number of people inside it, so Bryan did something unexpected instead.

He slowed the car down. "Brace yourselves!"

The four Lycans who jumped from the cliffs landed on the ground, and Bryan swerved to hit two of them with the car. Lycans were dense with muscle; hitting them was equivalent to hitting cement. The car crashed into them, the sound of crunching metal and the machinery inside it popping as parts exploded from the impact rang in Remy's ears. The seatbelt caught her, bruising her shoulder and chest. Bryan and Lykos hopped out of the car before Remy shook off the impact and fought with the two Lycans, unfortunately, not mangled under the car. There was a tug on the pack bonds, and Remy watched her father engage with a gray Lycan as Bryan engaged with the gray and brown one. In mid-fight, Lykos was shifting. His hands transitioned first to give him an edge in the fight. Bryan was doing the same, but Remy noticed he was on the defensive as he shifted. Remy unbuckled herself and pushed the door open. Tires were squealing from the cars behind them, but one car caught her attention. The black van caught up and was now parked.

Remy ducked behind the car so she could look without making her location known. Five more Lycans jumped out of the van. Four of them were already shifted, and the driver remained in human form. They approached them in a stalking fashion. Slowly, they assessed how her father and Bryan were fairing in the fight. The two they were fighting must not have had much fighting experience since it seemed like the enemy ones were on the ground and bloody. Lykos and Bryan's Lycans twisted around just in time for the newcomers to be a few feet away. The human was in the middle, while two on each side flanked him. The human smelled of ash and cedar. The cedar part had Remy perk up to get a better look. He was shorter than Lykos in his human form and thinner. The power that rolled off him was not impressive, but there was still enough to give off the feeling he was at least around the middle of rank among Alphas. The high and tight black hair told Remy he was someone who needed order or he'd go nuts. Every person she met with that haircut tended to be a control freak. His eyes were dark brown, nearing black. Either he was hanging onto control of his beast, or he was from part of the kingdom near the beach. His skin color was darker, so Remy went with the latter.

"Stand down, Alpha Lykos. It'll be in your best interest to call off this fight and yield to me."

Lykos snarled and snapped his jaws at him.

"This will be easier for you if you just come with us. The Kingdom is in shambles. If we continue to kill one another, there won't be a kingdom left to rule."

Lykos and Bryan leaned their heads down, their ears back and growling. They wouldn't stand down. Lykos was the second most powerful Alpha in the kingdom. His beast would never yield to someone of lesser dominance than him.

"If you wish to do this the hard way, I must oblige. My wolves haven't seen battle in a few days and are itching to kill something. Once you are dead, I can take your pack by force."

This guy is delusional.

Remy shed off her leather jacket so it wouldn't rip and shifted into her four-legged wolf form. Once her black paws hit the pavement, she leaped over the car and onto the back of a dark gray Lycan who did not expect her. A bite in the back of his neck sent the Lycan flailing around. Its arms were too big to reach her, and that was the upside of him being on his back. Her claws dug in as her teeth sank further into his flesh to keep him in place. She could hear the snarls and sounds of bodies colliding with each other. Four on two was still not the best odds, so she needed to wrap this up. She lifted her head back, taking a chunk of the Lycans neck with her as she hopped off his back. Blood coated his back, and he roared from pain. He turned in time for Remy to lunge again. The Lycan’s eyes widened at the sight of her, not expecting a four-legged wolf to attack him. It gave her the advantage of hitting him square in his chest and knocking him down to the ground. She sank her teeth into his neck again, feeling them scrape against the bone. She threw her head back again, ripping out his throat. If this Lycan was an Alpha, he could have healed from the wound by pulling on the pack bonds. His power level told her he wasn't much less dominant than the leader, but he was still not powerful enough to heal quickly. With most of his neck missing, he would be dead within a minute from exsanguination.

The Alpha was still in human form, watching the fight from where he stood while trying to confront her father. Lykos was battling two Lycans, and Bryan was in with the last one. Remy wasn't sure if it would be best to kill the Alpha to make the others stand down or take on one of the ones attacking her father to give him a fair fight. When her father threw one of the Lycans on the other side of the traffic, Remy took that as her opening to take the Alpha.

He heard her footsteps approaching and turned his body to face her. Remy lowered her head and snarled. The Alpha was just as shocked as his pupil and stepped back.

"What the fuck are you?"

She thought of shifting back to show her being an Alpha’s daughter but thought better of it. She lunged at him, and he moved aside in time to evade. She knew she needed him to tire down to get the advantage on him. It was going to be a dance between them in the meantime. Remy kept lunging, ensuring she wasn't losing the energy to keep it up. If she could delay the fight, this Alpha could also be caught off guard when her father killed the other Lycan and stepped in for this one. With him being in human form, his human half was still fully in control and could run to the car to get away. That didn't seem to be the best option. They needed this guy either killed or wounded enough to be captured.
